Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess, the award-winning writers and producers known for their work on The Sopranos, didn’t settle down in New Jersey, where the hit HBO series is set, but rather in a quieter, more exclusive hideaway about 100 miles from the state.
The couple’s picture-perfect home is tucked away on New York‘s Shelter Island, a 29-square-mile oasis between the North and South Forks of Long Island accessible only by ferry. The compound, currently on the market for $6.5 million with Stacey Cohen at the Agency Hamptons, dates back to 1888, but was renovated by the architect Lee Skolnick and the design firm Heiberg Cummings in 1988. Green and Burgess, both Emmy Award winners who have also worked on Blue Bloods, aren’t the only celebrities to have called it home, either: The well-known art critic Robert Hughes was a former owner.

Situated on a lush two acres, the estate encompasses several structures. The main residence, with its beachy shake siding, is full of serene, light-filled spaces. A stone fireplace anchors the large living room, which includes a separate sitting area that spills open to a small brick patio. The chef’s kitchen sports white cabinetry and stainless-steel appliances; it flows through to both a butler’s pantry and a dining room with a built-in breakfast nook.

Upstairs, the primary suite is a sizable offering with its own balcony and sitting room. The latter has a large round window that fills the space with sunlight and looks out on the manicured grounds. The accompanying en suite is a minimal space with a vintage-looking soaking tub. In total, the compound has four bedrooms and five bathrooms, plus a screened-in porch with plenty of lounge seating.

The 60-foot saltwater pool is accompanied by a shaded cabana and a pool house.

Outside, a storybook walkway covered in wisteria links the main residence to the barn. Here, you’ll find a two-car garage, a gym, and an artist studio where you can let your creativity run wild. The landscaped gardens, courtesy of designer Jeff Mendoza, include tidy hedges and all sorts of flora: rose bushes, hydrangeas, dogwood trees, and mature fig, apple, and pear trees. There’s even a vegetable garden where you can grow all sorts of goodies.

While the property’s been designed to bloom in every season, it feels especially suited to summer. On warm days, you can go for a dip in the 60-foot saltwater pool. A cozy cabana is just steps away, and a bit farther sits the pool house. With its own kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom, it can be used as a detached guest house or simply extra space when hosting garden parties.
