Supercar Maker Spyker Is Attempting Another Comeback

Spyker hopes the third time really is the charm.

The Dutch automaker is trying to resurrect itself following its second bankruptcy earlier this decade. It plans to so by releasing—what else—a new supercar. And the vehicle, which is scheduled to make its debut during Monterey Car Week, will be a purely gas-powered speed machine.

Spyker is going back to its roots as it begins its latest comeback attempt. The company, which was originally started in 1999 by Martin de Bruijn and Victor Muller, burst onto the scene with the C8 supercar just after the turn of the millennium. The performance-oriented vehicle, and its sibling, the luxurious C12, may have won over enthusiasts, including rapper Missy Elliot, but never gained the popularity the company needed. In 2014, Spyker, which had acquired Swedish automaker Saab three years prior, went bankrupt. The company would return to building cars in 2015, but by 2021, it was forced to file for bankruptcy yet again.

Spyker’s third attempt will be led by a familiar face, co-founder and CEO Muller, who bought back the brand’s intellectual property last year. The executive isn’t the only figure from the automaker’s past that will be part of its new era. The company’s first new vehicle will be a revival of the last car it announced, the C8 Preliator. The third generation of the brand’s first supercar was originally unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2016, but it never went into production.

The auto industry has changed dramatically since we first glimpsed the C8 Preliator. Despite this, the new version of the car won’t be battery- or hybrid-powered. Instead, it will feature a traditional V-8. Details are still fuzzy, but the eight-cylinder is expected to come equipped with two turbochargers and make around 800 hp, according to Road & Track. Spyker is also targeting a top speed north of 217 mph.

Intrigued? We won’t have to wait too long to find out what Spyker has in store for us this time around. The latest C8 will debut at this year’s installment of The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering. The annual event is one of the highlights of Monterey Car Week and will be held on Friday, August 14, this year.
