Shirley Temple met her second husband, Charles Black, at a cocktail party in Honolulu in early 1950 while she was on vacation following her divorce from John Agar. The former curly-haired child star went on to wed the decorated U.S. Navy veteran and businessman at a ceremony held later that year at an enchanting adobe ranch home on California’s Monterey Peninsula owned by Black’s parents.

It was “love at first sight” for 22-year-old Temple, whose marriage to Black lasted over five decades until he died in 2005. Speaking to SF Gate after his passing, Temple said: “We were introduced, and he said, ‘What do you do, are you a secretary?’ I said, ‘I can’t even type. I make films.’ He wasn’t too sure what I did. It was very refreshing to me—a handsome guy who wasn’t interested in Hollywood or anything about it.”

Designed by local architect Robert Stanton and completed in 1940 for James Byers Black, president and chairman of the Pacific Gas & Electric Company, and his wife, Katherine, the home was featured on the cover of Sunset Magazine in 1941. Later occupied by Rear Admiral Isham “Sam” Wiseman Linder, who died in 2022, the home sold that same year for $1.8 million, less than three weeks after it was listed for $515,000 over the asking price.

After a restoration and update by its current owners, the place has now returned to the market for just under $2.5 million, with David O’Neil of Sotheby’s International Realty, Carmel Brokerage holding the listing.

Tucked behind a low wall and gated entry on a magnolia tree-laced parcel spanning nearly half an acre in the affluent Aguajito Oaks neighborhood, near the historic Del Monte Golf Course, the white and terracotta-roof structure offers three bedrooms and a matching number of bathrooms. A single, curving level sprawling across roughly 2,200 square feet showcases the original hardwood floors, 20-inch-thick adobe walls, and soaring wood-beamed ceilings. Glass-paneled French doors in almost every room spill out to an expansive veranda and a private walled garden beyond.

Standing out is the living room where the nuptials took place, which is anchored by a traditional wood-burning fireplace with a white mantle and tiled surround. Other highlights include a formal dining area topped by a vintage wrought-iron chandelier, an open and airy kitchen with a breakfast nook and stainless appliances, and a primary retreat sporting a dressing area flanked by tall built-in wardrobes. There’s also an attached two-car garage on the property.

After beginning her acting career in the early 1930s, Temple went on to star in over 40 feature films and received a special juvenile Oscar when she was just 6 years old. After retiring from the screen and unsuccessfully running for Congress, she was appointed as a delegate to the U.N. General Assembly by President Richard M. Nixon in 1969 and later served as a U.S. Ambassador to both Ghana and Czechoslovakia and became the nation’s first female chief of protocol. Affectionately known as “Hollywood’s Biggest Little Star,” she died at her home in the San Francisco suburb of Woodside in 2014 at age 85.
