Porsche’s Latest Convertible Is Its First Open-Top GT3


Porsche is ready for the return of the sun and warm weather.

The German sports car maker unveiled a new GT3 variant called the S/C on Tuesday. The convertible is the first open-top version of the high-performance model and will come standard with a manual transmission.

Since its debut in 1999 as part of the 996 series, the GT3 has been available exclusively as a hard-top coupe. That changes with the S/C, which stands for Sport Cabriolet (the car is unrelated to the old 911 SC, or Super Carrera). From the front, the coupe and convertible versions of the street-legal race car look the same, with the difference only becoming clear when you view the vehicle from an angle and see that it lacks a roof. It’s been replaced with a fully automatic lightweight fabric top that stows away in a compartment located just behind the two-seat cabin. Lightweight hydraulic roof actuators mean that the top can be opened or closed in just 12 seconds at speeds of up to 31 mph.

Whether or not the convertible top has lightweight components, its inclusion adds weight to a car. This is a problem for a model like the GT3 which is famous for being a lightweight speed machine. To make up for the addition, the S/C borrows several components from the 911 S/T, including a carbon-fiber-reinforced hood, fenders, and doors. These modifications, along with ceramic-composite brakes and staggered magnesium wheels (20 inches up front, 21 inches in the back), mean the S/C tips the scales at 3,322 pounds, which, Car and Driver points out, is within the same ballpark as the GT3 Touring’s 3,267-pound curb weight (the standard GT3 weighs 3,130 pounds).

The GT3 S/C will be powered by the same naturally aspirated 4.0-liter boxer engine found in the standard and Touring versions. The mill pumps out 502 hp and 331 ft lbs of torque, all of which is routed to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual, and redlines at 9,000 rpm. Porsche didn’t release performance figures, but the more civilized Touring can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds.

The GT3 S/C will cost $275,350, or roughly $40,000 more than the coupe, when it goes on sale later this year. We don’t know exactly when that will be yet, but deliveries are expected to begin before the fall.
