Meg Whitman’s Northern California Ranch Lists for $18.5 Million

Though she’s best known for heading up eBay and Hewlett-Packard, Meg Whitman also has quite a reputation for being an avid angler. To satiate her enthusiasm for the sport, the billionaire businesswoman went so far as to pick up a rambling 1,530-acre ranch near the Northern California city of Redding that not only has access to one of the state’s top fly-fishing rivers and its trophy rainbow trout but also a custom Airstream fishing camp to boot.

Resting at the northern end of the picturesque Mill River Valley overlooking Mount Shasta, about 10 miles north of the small ranching community of Fall River Mills, the entire spread includes a main home, several ancillary structures, and a wealth of recreational and money-making opportunities. While living in Sacramento in 2019, Whitman and her husband, noted neurosurgeon Griffith R. Harsh IV, paid roughly $12.6 million for the property and another $1 million for ranch-related equipment. They later doled out $3 million for 57 additional acres. The couple has since moved to Telluride, Colorado, and isn’t spending as much time at their private retreat as they used to, so it’s now on the market for $18.5 million.

“Spring Creek Ranch is one of the two most revered ranches in the Fall River Valley, renowned for its beauty, wildlife, and fishing,” said Bill McDavid of Hall and Hall, who shares the listing with Terry Hundemer of the Chickering Company. “For once, it is not an exaggeration to say this is a genuine ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity. A ranch where the most experienced fly fisherman can be challenged in the gin-clear private waters of Spring Creek, while a novice fisherman can fine-tune his skills on one of the many other waters on or adjoining the ranch.”

Three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms can be found in the owner’s residence, which has roughly 3,000 square feet highlighted by a living room sporting a stove-style fireplace and sliding glass doors opening out to a screened-in porch. An eat-in kitchen is outfitted with a central island and stainless appliances, and elsewhere is a spacious dining room and a fireside primary bedroom.

The Airstream camp on the banks of Spring Creek, one of the river’s major headwaters, includes a custom kitchen trailer with a screened-in dining area, while two additional trailers connected by a deck each have one bedroom and a bathroom. Barns, shops, and outbuildings are also scattered across the property, which includes roughly 650 acres of irrigated farmland and pastures contracted out for hay production and cattle grazing.

Whitman, who has an estimated $3.9 billion net worth per Forbes, is recognized for her lengthy career as president and CEO of eBay from 1998 to 2008. The New York native, 69, went on to head up Hewlett Packard (before it was restructured into Hewlett Packard Enterprise) and the short-lived Quibi media startup. A Republican, she also co-chaired Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign in 2008 and ran for governor of California the following year, only to be defeated by Jerry Brown after spending a record-breaking $81 million on her primary campaign and securing the Republican gubernatorial nomination.
