Late Banking Titan Jim Ayers’s Massive Nashville Penthouse Lists for $15M

By combining three units atop downtown Nashville’s Viridian tower, the late banking titan Jim Ayers and his wife Janet Ayers created what is considered the city’s largest penthouse, with about 7,700 square feet spanning the building’s upper floors. The Ayers reportedly purchased the individual condos in 2014.

Known throughout Tennessee as the founder and longtime chairman of FirstBank, one of the state’s largest financial institutions, Jim helped transform the regional lender into a publicly traded company after acquiring it in the 1980s. Beyond banking, he and Janet became prominent philanthropists through the Ayers Foundation Trust and major donations to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where a 15-story facility now bears his name.

Now, the couple’s sky-high residence is preparing for its next chapter and is listed at $15 million by Compass agent Erin Krueger. The grand penthouse sprawls over two floors with three bedrooms, three full bathrooms, and three powder rooms.

Designed by Scott Wilson Architecture with interiors by Cherie Grisham, the residence opens with a dramatic double-height foyer capped by a 20-foot reflective ceiling and anchored by a sweeping helical staircase. Floor-to-ceiling glass wraps the home, while eight private balconies offer unobstructed views of the Nashville skyline.

The layout is divided into distinct wings, formal entertaining areas, private family spaces, and a dedicated work zone with dual offices and a conference room. In the kitchen, custom millwork is paired with Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, dual dishwashers, a butler’s pantry, illuminated onyx accents, and slabs of imported Italian marble.

Perhaps the most extravagant feature is the primary suite’s three-story custom wardrobe. Connected by a transparent spiral staircase, the boutique-style closet dedicates separate levels to shoes, clothing, and additional storage, even incorporating a gift-wrapping area. The penthouse comes with seven garage parking spaces.

Marketing materials indicate there is an option to purchase an adjacent two-bedroom junior penthouse (with 3 more parking spaces) for guests, staff, or future expansion.
