Jason Momoa Turns His Classic Land Rovers and Vintage Harleys Into EVs


Jason Momoa is speeding ahead with his electric revolution.

The Hollywood star, famous for his roles in Aquaman, Game of Thrones, and Dune, has turned five more of his prized gas-powered rides into zero-emission machines for the second season of his hit docuseries On the Roam. It comes shortly after he converted his stunning 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II into a fully fledged EV for the first season in 2024.  

Momoa once again teamed up with Electrogenic for the builds. The British outfit is known for turning classic cars into contemporary electric rides and has also developed nifty “drop-in” EV conversion kits. (We have previously got behind the wheel of its Porsche 911 and DeLorean restomods.) 

“I really love annoying Steve at Electrogenic and trying to make things extremely difficult for them,” Momoa said in a statement. “I come in with the wildest ideas.”

Working closely with Momoa, the Electrogenic team transformed two of his classic Land Rovers and three of his vintage Harley-Davidsons, giving each a modern powertrain without removing any of the original character and charm.

Electrogenic

The first of the two Land Rovers is a historic 1949 Series 1 80-inch that had its original 1.6-litre 4-cylinder removed from the engine bay and replaced with a 48 kWh battery pack housed in a bespoke, vintage-style box. The batteries feed a 150kW electric motor, dialled down to approximately a third of the available torque, which drives the original transmission via a proprietary 2:1 fixed-reduction gearbox that is bolted directly to the existing transfer box. This ensures that the look and feel of the four-wheel-drive system—including all the original levers—remains fully intact. 

“The technical challenge with the Land Rovers was to introduce electric power while retaining the original four-wheel-drive transmission, which is what gives these iconic vehicles their unrivalled off-road capabilities—now enhanced by effortless torque,” explains Electrogenic CEO Steve Drummond.

The revamped Series I drives with renewed vigour, offering an impressive range of over 150 miles. “The Series 1 Land Rover is effortless to drive and no longer has exhaust gases that notoriously recirculate into the cabin,” Drummond adds.

The second Land Rover is an exceptionally rare 1961 Series IIA 109 Dormobile—one of just 150 such camper conversions produced—that has been fitted with a 62kWh battery, a 120 kW electric motor, and a bespoke fixed-reduction gearbox that again bolts directly to the original transfer box. The camper’s interior has also been electrified, with a modern induction hob replacing the original gas stove. “It’s a whole different experience, me and my daughter going through the forest quietly—it’s beautiful,” Momoa says.

Electrogenic

The three Harleys, the first two-wheeled conversions undertaken by Electrogenic, have an 11 kW Maeving hub motor built into the rear wheel, plus 2.7 kWh battery packs and control units all tucked away in custom, period-correct panniers. The 1924 Harley-Davidson Model JD and a 1927 Model JD—both originally powered by twin-cylinder, 74-cubic-inch engines—have been reimagined as plug-in hybrids with an EV powertrain working alongside the conventional mills. The bikes can cover more than 50 miles on electricity alone, or more with gas.

“If I want to hear the sound, I can, and if not, I can just flip it over to electric,” Momoa says. “I feel that anyone who rides motorcycles needs to try it. Your brain is going: ‘I’m moving, I’ve got power coming to me, and there’s no sound.’ I can have a full conversation with my friend, just going through the mountains… cruising on this old 1920s bike, and totally feeling it’s a 1920s bike. It’s just a really beautiful experience.” 

The 1921 Model FD, meanwhile, has been converted to a fully electric bike. “This is the best thing we’ve ever made…” Momoa adds. “It is unbelievable. It’s so smooth. I’ve ridden on an e-bike before; I’ve ridden on e-bicycles; I’ve ridden on e-motorcycles, but the idea of riding on an old (electrified) bike was just unlike anything I’ve experienced.”

Electrogenic also equipped Momoa’s Schutt Industries Xventure XV-2 trailer with integrated battery storage for off-grid camping excursions. “I live a life that’s kind of off the grid, and I love being outdoors,” Momoa says. “I want to be able to stay outdoors and try to do something in a more sustainable way.”
