Jack Daniel’s and McLaren Racing Released a $600 Whiskey

Jack Daniel’s has been releasing a lot of new whiskey over the past few years, and most of it differs in very interesting ways from classic Old No. 7. Also, all of these bottles have been relatively affordably priced at well under $100. But that is definitely not the case with the latest collaboration between Jack Daniel’s and its Formula 1 partner McLaren Racing, a new $600 whiskey aged in special barrels that clocks in at over 117 proof.

Jack Daniel’s first announced its partnership with McLaren back in 2022 as a multi-year collaboration involving prominent placement of the whiskey brand’s name on drivers’ uniforms and annual special releases. Up until now, those whiskeys have differed from Old No. 7 mostly in terms of their packaging, specifically bottles and boxes with labels and colors meant to mimic McLaren’s branding, although in March the whiskey was bottled at a slightly higher 86 proof compared to Old No. 7’s 80 proof.

The new Jack Daniel’s Halo MK1 Tennessee Whiskey is something completely different, however. First of all, it is bottled at 117.4 proof, or 58.7 percent ABV, which is pretty high for Jack Daniel’s (although not nearly has high as some of its hazmat bottlings, like the recent Special Release Rye Whiskey). It was made from the same mashbill as all of Jack’s whiskey, aside from the rye—80 percent corn, 8 percent rye, and 12 percent malted barley—and filtered through 10 feet of sugar maple charcoal before barreling as part of the Lincoln County process. Also of note, those barrels are different from what Jack usually matures its whiskey in. According to a press release, the staves used to construct the casks were “aged in the open air for a prolonged period,” which was meant to soften the wood tannins before toasting. We did not get to sample the whiskey yet, but according to master distiller Chris Fletcher the nose has aromas of sweet maple, fruit, and toasted oak, and the palate has sweet caramel, chocolate, pipe tobacco, and baking spice flavors.

“We are thrilled to continue to celebrate many fantastic years of partnership with McLaren with the debut of our most exciting collaboration yet—a remarkable bottle that is destined to become a collector’s item for Formula 1 fans and whiskey drinkers alike,” said Mark Bacon, Jack Daniel’s SVP, global managing director, in a statement. “Halo MK1 Tennessee Whiskey embodies our shared values of innovation, excellence and ambition.” The bottle design is unlike anything else Jack has released before as well, featuring alloy metal, micro-suede, and carbon fiber print, some of the same elements that McLaren uses to produce its cars.

As mentioned before, this is a pricy whiskey at $600 per bottle, making it what Jack calls the most premium and limited global release in the brand’s history. If you want to try the new Halo MK1 whiskey for yourself, you can order it now from the brand’s website, along with other McLaren collab bottles.
