If you are a spouse, son, or daughter who really likes to wait till the last minute before Mother’s Day to buy a gift, but happens to have a mom who loves bourbon, you’re in luck. Kentucky distillery Four Roses released its Mother’s Day Private Barrel Selection just in time for the holiday, and this whiskey amps up the age and proof of the distillery’s typical bourbon.

As a reminder, Four Roses, which was acquired by Gallo from Kirin recently, stands out from other Kentucky distilleries for the fact that it uses 10 different recipes to make its bourbon. That is because the distillery has two mashbills and five yeast strains to combine—and it actually added two new mashbills in 2024, meaning it will have 20 distinct recipes to play with when that whiskey is finally mature. For many years, the single barrel lineup consisted of just one recipe, OBSV, meaning it is a straight bourbon (S) made at the Four Roses distillery (O) using the high-rye B mashbill and V yeast strain. For the past few years, the distillery has added some new limited-edition single barrels to the lineup, which most recently included OESQ, OESF, and OBSK recipes, all aged seven to nine years and bottled at 100 proof.

The Mother’s Day Private Barrel Selection is the OBSQ recipe, meaning it’s made from the high-rye B mashbill (60 percent corn, 35 percent rye, and five percent barley) and the Q yeast strain, which is supposed to add “floral essence” to the whiskey according to the distillery. This bourbon was aged for 14 years, which is much longer than the typical single barrels, and bottled at 115.78 proof, which is significantly stronger than most Four Roses expressions. In other words, this is for the moms who are real bourbon fans, and we know there are plenty of you out there. The official tasting notes describe crisp oak, sweet vanilla, and candied fruit on the nose, followed by ripe berries, honey, and caramel on the palate, finishing with cherry and creamy barrel tones. Mother’s Day Private Barrel Selection is available to purchase at the distillery now (SRP $139) with a two bottles per customer limit.

Obviously, this weekend isn’t about the dads, but they shouldn’t feel too left out because Four Roses will also release a Father’s Day Private Barrel Selection starting on June 20. That bourbon will be made from the OBSV recipe, aged for 14 years, and bottled at 128.71 proof. You can find the rest of the lineup at websites like ReserveBar now.
