Shortly before her premiere as homicide detective Laura Diamond on the police procedural comedy The Mysteries of Laura in 2014, Debra Messing doled out $5.5 million for a rambling apartment within a boutique complex on the Upper East Side of Manhattan that was designed in the late 1920s by Rockefeller Center architects Raymond Hood and John Mead Howells.
The Emmy-winning actress, known for her role as interior designer Grace Adler on the long-running sitcom Will & Grace, first hired Lee Stahl of the design-build firm TRH New York to create a soothing refuge showcasing white, cream, and soft gray interiors imbued with vibrant pops of color, chocolate-colored hardwood floors, high coffered ceilings, and detailed crown molding and millwork.
In 2017, as she was preparing to film a new 13-episode reboot of Will & Grace in Los Angeles, a fire in a neighboring structure forced her to re-engage Stahl to renovate the place once again. Now that her son is in his 20s and getting an apartment with his friends, she has decided to downsize and has placed her twice-revamped spread on the market for just under $6.5 million. Set on the eighth floor of the nine-story pre-war art deco building, the home has four (and possibly five) bedrooms and four full bathrooms in roughly 3,100 square feet. A private elevator landing leads to a grand entrance gallery, which flows to a living area warmed by a white brick wood-burning fireplace with a metal surround and an elegant dining room topped with a black sunburst chandelier, both with French doors opening to Juliet balconies.
Beside the living room is a crimson-hued library with a full bath that makes it easily convertible to a fifth bedroom, while an eat-in kitchen connected to the dining room sports custom cabinetry, Carrara marble countertops, and a built-in pet-feeding station. Bedrooms are found in a separate wing. In addition to a pair of guest bedrooms that share a Jack-and-Jill bath and a small staff suite, an expansive corner primary suite flaunts a windowed dressing room and a beige-tiled bathroom with radiant-heated floors, a three-paneled mirror, a smart toilet, and a soaking tub accented by a bed of river rocks at its base.
