Residences designed by modernist master Richard Neutra rarely come to market, particularly those that have remained in the hands of so few owners.
Tucked into Los Angeles‘s Nichols Canyon, this four-bedroom, four-bath home was designed by the visionary architect in 1962 for artist Harumi Taniguchi and her husband Robert Hendershot. The property evolved over the following decades, with Neutra’s son, Dion, overseeing an expansion in 1982 and a further addition completed in 1994 by John Blanton, one of Neutra’s longtime project architects.
Architect Eve Steele acquired the home in 2017 for just over $2.1 million and spent the next two years restoring it. Guided by original drawings, correspondence, and specifications housed in Neutra’s archives at UCLA, she carefully returned the residence to its original character. Now being offered for only the second time in its history, the property is listed for $6 million with Barry Gray and Mike Deasy of Compass.

Many of the hallmarks of Neutra’s residential architecture remain intact. Integrated into its hillside setting, the home features aluminum-trimmed ribbon windows that flood the interiors with natural light, while deep overhangs and floating rooflines shade its numerous terraces and balconies. Inside, white stucco surfaces, warm wood, and shimmering silver accents lend the interiors a clean, understated character, and though Steele introduced modern systems and updated mechanicals, Neutra’s original cabinetry remains throughout.

Spanning nearly 3,400 square feet across three levels, the residence is organized around a series of interconnected living spaces. The main living room centers on a brick fireplace, while a second fireplace anchors the den, complete with a sunken conversation area and wet bar. Elsewhere, the home’s original carport has been enclosed and reimagined as a streamlined kitchen and dining space, and, on the lower level, a flexible room with direct access to a gravel courtyard can function as an office, studio, or gym.

The primary bedroom, with a quaint window seat, opens onto a balcony. The accompanying bathroom is finished in gray-and-white tile, a palette echoed throughout the home’s other baths. Another bedroom includes a combination dressing area and lounge, making it suitable as an alternate primary suite.
Four separate terraces are positioned across the property, including a sizable deck overlooking a year-round natural creek that runs through the site, providing a natural soundtrack to the outdoor spaces.
