Director and producer Jesse Bochco—son of television pioneer Steven Bochco and actress Barbara Bosson—and his wife, production and interior designer Rae Bochco, began building a bespoke home from the ground up on a double lot in the seaside community of Venice around 15 years ago, envisioning it as a midcentury-meets-bohemian homage to celebrated Los Angeles architect Ray Kappe.
The couple enlisted architect Alexander Liberman of AML Studio to bring their vision to life. The focus was on honesty in materials and construction, simple forms, and harmonious indoor-outdoor spaces, with plenty of room left over for personal flourishes that reflected the spirit of the site and lifestyle of the young family, including their 5-year-old daughter, Stevie.
“This house is more of a tribute to classic midcentury than a slavish reproduction,” Jesse subsequently told Architectural Digest. “All the decisions we made revolved around light and warmth,” Rae added. “We wanted the house to feel connected to the earth and the environment, and also connected to this neighborhood.”

The sunken living room is anchored by a striking tiled fireplace stretching to the ceiling.

Originally bought by Bosson in 2011 for $1.25 million, the first of the two lots was transferred to Jesse and his then-wife Kate Danson, daughter of Ted Danson, the following year, with Danson later quit-claiming her spousal rights to the property. Jesse acquired the adjacent lot for $2.72 million to complete the double-lot footprint, paving the way for him and Rae to build the residence that stands today.
The resulting spread offers five bedrooms, five full bathrooms, and a powder room across roughly 6,400 square feet, with the U-shaped, two-story dwelling donning a mix of wide-plank oak and concrete aggregate floors hand-inlaid with brass, custom wood doors and windows, and expansive walls of glass. There’s also a detached one-bedroom, one-bath guest/pool house.

A covered front porch opens into a double-height foyer, which flows to a sunken living room anchored by a floor-to-ceiling fireplace. Elsewhere is an elegant formal dining room, a media room equipped with a wet bar, and a sleek kitchen sporting a Lacanche range, an eat-in island, and a butler’s pantry. Other highlights include a handsome walnut-paneled study lined with shelves, along with a plush primary retreat sporting a walk-in closet and an organic bath spotlighted by a Boffi soaking tub.
The Stefan Hammerschimdt-designed grounds, laced with an abundance of drought-tolerant plantings, host several alfresco lounging and dining spaces, a built-in barbecue, a pool and spa clad in Ann Sacks Zellige tile, and a cedar-shaded pergola. Rounding it all off is the aforementioned guest/pool house with a kitchen, plus an attached three-car garage.
Jesse Bochco is most known for his work on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Murder in the First. Early in his career, he frequently teamed up with his father on legal and police dramas, serving as a producer and director on shows like NYPD Blue, Philly, and Raising the Bar. The couple previously owned a 1950s Ray Kappe-designed home in Pacific Palisades that they bought in 2005 for almost $1.4 million, transformed with architect Barbara Callas, and sold in 2012 for $3.4 million to Photoshop creator Thomas Knoll.
