In the hilly suburb of Kirtland, Ohio, one palatial pad towers above the rest. Perched on the second-highest point in Lake County, the historic property, known as “Playmore,” was built in 1929 by the late architect Benjamin S. Hubbell, who worked on the Cleveland Museum of Art, the West Side Market, and other local landmarks, serving as his full-time home in the subsequent years. It has had only four owners in the past century, with the current being Wade Miquelon, the former CEO of Jo-Ann Stores.
Miquelon, who also served as an executive at Procter & Gamble and chief financial officer of Walgreens, acquired the 12-acre estate in June 2017 for a hair over $2 million, property records show. He discovered the listing while looking to relocate to Cleveland, where the now-defunct Jo-Ann Stores was based. “Eventually curiosity got the better of me, and I went out there to see the property and really couldn’t believe it,” he told Mansion Global. “I got to the door and was just blown away, and when the owner opened it, I said, ‘I’ll buy it.’ It was love at first sight.”

Miquelon bought the property from a manufacturing executive, who owned it for nearly 25 years and made some substantial upgrades, including updating the plumbing and adding another wing. Miquelon himself refurbished original details, such as the woodwork, marble, and inlaid Tiffany glass, while also modernizing the overall design. He is now selling the home for $5.95 million. David B. Ayers and Nick Zawitz of the Agency hold the listing.
The French Provincial exterior has the classic, refined feel typical of prewar architecture, with soaring sandstone walls and slate roofing. Inside, it’s a slightly different story. The 14,900-square-foot interior, thoughtfully updated by John H. Wolf of Wolf Home Design, sees the original period features boldly contrasted with the contemporary elements that Miquelon and the previous owner weaved in.

A three-story reception room anchors the living quarters, leading to a grand salon, a paneled library, and a kitchen topped with a bespoke Tiffany skylight, along with the seven bedrooms and 10 bathrooms spread throughout. The 3,000-square-foot entertainment wing functions almost like a private members’ club, with a dedicated entrance leading to a billiards room, a cocktail lounge with a custom Harley-Davidson on display, a Moorish hookah lounge with backlit stone walls, a modern wine cellar set beneath a wood-finished coffered ceiling, a music studio, and a movie room.

The manicured gardens provide sweeping vistas of the Holden Arboretum.

Heading outside, the manicured grounds feature expansive stone terraces, bocce courts, a koi pond, a resort-style swimming pool, and gorgeous English gardens. Ayers says local landscape architect Roger Dorer of Bremec Group planted over 20,000 trees at Playmore, creating a leafy barrier between it and the rest of the Kirtland. Through the foliage, you can see the Holden Arboretum forests and gardens, as well as Lake Erie.
To top it off, Playmore can be sold furnished with art. Pricing for those inclusions is available upon request.
