This historic Tudor mansion in the English countryside near Tunbridge Wells, Kent, some 50 miles southeast of London, reflects nearly 500 years of architectural evolution. Originally known as Church House and now called the Grange, the residence dates to around 1530. An archaeological survey conducted in 2009 found that the timber-framed structure was modified not long after its initial construction, likely between 1530 and 1580, and it has continued to evolve over the centuries, with each addition reflecting a different chapter in the property’s history.

The Grade II-listed home still retains many of its earliest Tudor details. The oldest rooms—including the formal dining room, study, and sitting room—feature exposed timber beams, oak-framed leaded-glass windows, carved woodwork, and an original inglenook fireplace.

Victorian-era additions reconfigured the layout and introduced more expansive living spaces. The kitchen and its adjoining breakfast room now serve as the center of the home and come complete with a four-oven Aga along with Sub-Zero and Bosch appliances. Nearby is a garden room and an orangery overlooking the grounds.

The most recent expansion came in 2001, when the current owners worked with architect Stuart Page on a major renovation that added a spacious drawing room with high ceilings, a stone fireplace, and French doors opening onto a crescent-shaped terrace. A sprawling wellness wing was also introduced, complete with an indoor swimming pool, gym, changing facilities, and direct garden access. In total, the home now measures around 14,150 square feet.

The primary suite is located within the oldest part of the residence, beneath vaulted ceilings with exposed beams, while several additional bedrooms and guest accommodations are spread across the upper floors.

The grounds span nearly 16 acres, with landscape designer Bonnie Lamont reworking the gardens to accommodate elegant outdoor entertaining with plush lawns, stone terraces, and rose gardens. She divided the landscape into a series of “rooms,” defined by trimmed hedges and scented plantings. Farther afield are a Victorian greenhouse, a tennis court, and horse paddocks, while a converted coach house and a barn now used as office space add further flexibility.

The estate also carries a connection to World War II. During the Battle of Britain, the skies above the property formed part of the aerial front line, a history that is commemorated today with a plaque installed on the grounds. The Grange is listed for 5.96 million pounds, or approximately $8 million, with Knight Frank and Blue Book Agency.
