Woodford Reserve’s core expression is a bar cart staple for a reason—it’s a moderately priced bottle that is packed full of classic bourbon flavors. But the distillery has a lot more up its sleeve than this OG whiskey, like one of its most popular limited-edition expressions, Double Double Oaked, which has returned for the new year.

Woodford Reserve is owned by Brown-Forman, the same parent company that controls popular brands like Old Forester, King of Kentucky, and Jack Daniel’s. Double Double Oaked, which was first released in 2015, was originally part of the Distillery Series, but that changed last year when Woodford decided to make it a permanent member of its portfolio—albeit one that is released in limited amounts, which is why it is just making its return now. The whiskey is a riff on the original Double Oaked bourbon, an expression that is aged for five to seven years and then spends an additional year in a new set of charred oak barrels.

According to master distiller emeritus Chris Morris, Double Double Oaked was created after he realized the distillery had Double Oaked barrels that were older than the established finishing period used for that release, and that the whiskey inside them tasted pretty good. Double Double Oaked, therefore, is Double Oaked whiskey that has spent an additional year in heavily toasted, lightly charred, new oak barrels (not put into two different finishing casks), adding more wood and spice notes to the palate. “This handcrafted double-barreled bourbon is beloved,” said master distiller Elizabeth McCall in a statement. “Resting five to seven years in the first barrel, then up to two years in a second barrel, this liquid features extraordinary flavor notes. It is unexpected and complex.”

We did not receive a sample yet of the 2026 release of Double Double Oaked to try, but it comes in a 700-ml bottle at 90.4 proof, the same strength as regular Woodford Reserve bourbon. The official tasting notes describe maple syrup, butterscotch, caramel, bittersweet chocolate, and burnt marshmallow aromas on the nose, followed by dried cherry, cranberry, blackberry jam, apple, chai tea, and clove on the palate, along with some oak and spice. The suggested retail price for Double Double Oaked is $200, and it will be available starting tomorrow, January 14, at the distillery and select retailers.
