Volvo is doing everything it can to put its best foot forward with its next wave of EVs.
The Swedish automaker unveiled the EX60, an all-electric version of its most popular model, on Wednesday. The SUV will launch as part of the brand’s 2027 lineup and will offer one of the best driving ranges on the market when it goes on sale.
Volvo has been selling series-production EVs since the start of the decade, but those models, like so many other battery-powered vehicles across the industry, have struggled to catch on with customers. So, the brand is preparing to move onto a new generation of EVs, which will be built on the scalable SPA3 platform. The first is the EX60, which is based on the XC60, the compact SUV that passed the legendary 240 to become the automaker’s best-selling model of all time last year.

We’re still waiting on all the final details, but Volvo says it will sell three version of the EX60 at launch. The most impressive of these looks to be the P12 AWD Electric, which will make 670 hp and 583 ft lbs of torque, according to Car and Driver. Even more impressive, though, is the SUV’s range. The automaker says the top-tier EX60 will be able to drive a best-in-class 400 miles on a single charge. European outlets are putting this figure closer to 500 miles, but that estimate was likely based on the continent’s more forgiving WLTP test cycle.
The EX60 sports a smoother, more streamlined exterior than the current XC60, but it’s clear the two SUVs are closely related. The front fascia found on EVs like the EX30 and EX90 has also been redesigned to be less cluttered, though the brand’s T-shaped “Thor’s Hammer” headlights are still present. You’ll also find those Volvo’s trademark vertical taillights in the back. A rugged Cross Country variant is also said to be on the way. The trim, which has never been offered from the standard XC60, will feature wider track, boosted ride height, and other off-road goodies.

The interior of the five-seat EV promise to be roomier than its gas-powered sibling thanks to a wheelbase that is four inches longer. The cabin will also feature its fair share of tech, including a 15.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system that features Gemini, Google’s AI assistant. The system will also come with Apple Music pre-installed, which should help you take advantage of its 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system.
Volvo will start taking U.S. orders for the EX60 this spring, with deliveries expected to begin by the summer. The fully electric SUV will start at $60,000, but if you want the range-topping P12, expect to spend at least $10,000 more.
