Stark Future is doing everything it can to narrow the gap between electric and gas motorcycles.

The Barcelona-based shop has already proven it can make a quality electric two-wheeler, but its latest, the Varg SM, will launch as one of the more intriguing supermotos currently on the market. That’s because the bike has a power-to-weight ratio that its traditional peers can’t match.

The company’s latest model is based on its breakthrough off-road Varg EX and its motorsports sibling, the Varg XM. The newer bike has the chance to be even bigger than those two, though. That’s because it is fully road legal.

Like its predecessors, the Varg SM sports a sleek, motocross-style look. But the big story here is the powertrain. The setup includes a carbon-fiber-sleeved electric motor and a 7.2-kWh honeycomb magnesium battery, according to Motorcycle.com. The pair combines to kick out up to 80 hp and 673 ft lbs of torque.

That kind of output would be impressive on any bike, but it’s especially noteworthy when you take into account that Stark’s latest weighs just 274 pounds. One of the big problems with electronic two-wheelers, is the added weight from the motor and battery pack. That doesn’t appear to be an issue for the Varg SM, though, which has a power-to-weight ratio of 0.479 kW/kg, a figure that New Atlas reports is better than any other supermoto on the market—including gas-powered models.

Brute strength is far from the only metric that matters when it comes to EVs, though. Stark says its new bike has a mixed riding range of about 73 miles, and a highway range of about 50 miles. No, it is not suited for long road trips, but it should get most of us to work and back daily, and has more than enough range for a day of fun. The supermoto also comes with a 3.3-kWh portable charger that can fully refill its battery in two hours. The unit is compatible with both household outlets and AC car chargers.

Stark plans to sell two versions of the Varg SM at launch. The standard model maxes out at 60 hp, while the “Alpha” trim ups output to 80 hp. The former will start at $12,900 and the latter at $13,900. The two-wheeler will go on sale early next year in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and select markets in the U.S.
