Watch out, Windy City: A new restaurant just blew into town.
Crying Tiger, a spot that was one of our most exciting fall debuts in the U.S. this year, just opened its doors in Chicago this week. A collaboration between Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants and Thai Dang—the chef behind Chicago’s beloved Vietnamese spot HaiSous—the new space is meant to take you on a journey through Southeast Asia—in fact, the toque spent time traveling to Bangkok, Vietnam, and Hong Kong, among other countries, to get inspiration for the menu.
That journey resulted in plenty of dishes that show off the bold flavors of the region. You’ll start off with offerings like prawn toast youtiao, a Chinese donut with herb nam jim, and chargrilled sugarcane beef bo la lot. For the mains, you can expect grilled wagyu beef nam tok, clay pot lobster pad thai, and rolled rice noodles with roaster maitake and Chinese broccoli. Of course, you can also enjoy the dish after which the restaurant is named, a 45-day dry-aged ribeye steak. And to indulge in your sweet tooth, try out the Crying Tiger dessert, complete with wild thai banana and foster sauce, or a bánh flan cheesecake with vanilla bean and palm sugar caramel.

“This restaurant means so much to me because the menu pays homage to my immigrant family and our culinary traditions,” Dang said in a statement. “As we explored Southeast Asia, every culture seemed to borrow flavors and ingredients from one another, and we are excited to share the diversity in this type of cuisine.”
Spirits at the restaurant, meanwhile, comes from the mind of beverage director Kevin Beary, of Three Dots and a Dash fame. Crying Tiger offers up both cocktails and zero-proof iterations for you to sip on. That includes a salted plum tequila soda, done up with blanco tequila pickled plum, calamansi, and Singha soda water; a coconut fat washed Sbagliato; and a salted mango limeade served on shaved ice. If you’re more of a wine fanatic, the list here is home to more than 75 options from countries such as Germany, New Zealand, and Australia—all mean to pair perfectly with those Southeast Asian flavors.
And for dessert, a variety of sorbets are on the menu.

As for design, Lettuce Entertain You once again tapped the team at David Collins Studio to bring their vision to life. Previously the pair worked on the group’s Tre Dita restaurant at the St. Regis Chicago. For Crying Tiger, the creatives chose to evoke the feeling of a Southeast Asian night markets with a touch of industrial flare from Chicago’s history. The blend can be seen throughout the 140-seat space, with patchwork motifs, swanky booths, and vibrant drapery acting as the main stars—in addition to handmade chandeliers from a Bangkok-based metalwork artist Saruta “PiN” Kiatparkpoom and glazed ceramic tiles from Chicago’s David Kim.
Beary has some more plans up his sleeve at the locale, too. A standalone cocktail bar will step onto the scene later this year in Crying Tiger’s lower level. For now, though, you can check out the new restaurant seven days a week at 51 W. Hubbard Street in the River North area.
