Nicklas Backstrom Sells Virginia House for $11 Million

After more than four years of ownership, Nicklas Backstrom kicked his Northern Virginia estate back on the market last spring shortly before his contract with the Washington Capitals expired in summer 2025 following a 17-season run. Though he had already stepped away from the team in 2023 due to a lingering hip injury, he’s since returned to his native Sweden, where he’s currently hitting the ice with the Swedish Hockey League team Brynas that he began his career in the early 2000s.

The Stanley Cup-winning center—not to be confused with retired Finnish goaltender Niklas Backstrom, whose name differs by only one letter—first hoisted the home in the affluent suburban community of McLean up for sale last April at a dash under $15 million and then reduced the price to nearly $12 million a few months later. Now the place has officially transferred to an unnamed buyer for $11 million, which is $2.5 million more than he paid in 2021 when it was newly built.

The modern white stucco structure sits on an acre beyond a gated driveway, which empties at a motor court and an attached four-car garage. A total of seven bedrooms, seven full baths, and five powder rooms are sprawled across roughly 17,100 square feet of Skip Sroka-designed living space on three levels boasting chevron-patterned hardwood floors, designer light fixtures, steel-framed windows and doors, a half-dozen fireplaces, dual staircases, and an elevator.

Among the notable perks is a tree-laced backyard holding a waterfall-fed pool and a spillover spa, plus a fire pit and a built-in barbecue next to an alfresco dining area. There’s also a tricked-out lower level sporting a recreation room ideal for entertaining with a seated bar and a wine wall, as well as a movie theater, a mirrored gym, and sauna and steam rooms. The home offers high-tech Savant and Sonos systems.

In addition to formal living and dining rooms, the latter serviced by a wet bar, other highlights include a cozy family room that connects via a casual dining area to a sleek kitchen outfitted with SieMatic cabinetry from Germany, top-tier Wolf, Sub-Zero, and Gaggenau appliances, and a catering kitchen. An upstairs primary retreat, meanwhile, flaunts a private balcony, a separate sitting area, two walk-in closets, and a luxe marble bath spotlighted by a soaking tub and a steam shower.

Backstrom, who was selected fourth overall by the Capitals in the first round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft and played for the team from 2007 to 2023, now resides in a luxury villa in Gavle, Sweden, which he had built in 2010. Sherif Abdalla of Compass held the listing, with Wetherly Barker Hemeon and Karen Barker of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty repping the buyer.
