Michael Kors Lists New York Beach House for $6.3 Million

For more than a decade, Michael Kors has embraced a glamorous dichotomy at his seaside compound in the secluded Water Island enclave of Fire Island. Just 50 miles from New York City, the designer swapped the intensity of his day-to-day life in high fashion for a barefoot hippie existence—an indulgent, laid-back lifestyle Kors has defined as “caviar with potato chips while listening to Joni Mitchell in Capri in flip-flops, wearing ten-ply cashmere.”

Kors and his longtime husband, Lance Le Pere, acquired the property in 2001 for $950,000 and engaged architect Scott Bromley—best known for designing Studio 54 in the late 1970s—to shape their relaxed-chic getaway, drawing inspiration from places like Parrot Cay, Big Sur, and Amangiri, as well as the work of George Nakashima and Hans Wegner. “If you want a beach-bum life, you have to find beach bums,” Kors said in a 2015 Vogue interview. “And the architect, Scott Bromley—his idea of getting dressed up is if his shorts are clean.”

Set on two parcels spanning just under a quarter of an acre, the modern two-building complex showcases a 2,100-square-foot main home holding a single bedroom, a full bathroom, and a powder room. A meandering pathway leads to a guesthouse with four bedrooms and three full bathrooms, while a lengthy boardwalk stretches across the dunes to 200 feet of shoreline on the Atlantic Ocean.

Topped with large, floor-to-ceiling triangular windows framing ocean views, the primary residence features a great room sporting a giant paper lantern-style pendant dangling from a vaulted whitewashed beam ceiling, a minimalist floating-hearth fireplace, and glass and wood-trimmed doors opening to a wraparound deck. In addition to a streamlined oak kitchen with an eat-in island and a separate dining area, a fireside primary suite occupying the lower level comes with a private outdoor oasis hosting a shower and plunge pool.

A Long Island native, Kors launched his eponymous fashion label in 1981 and gained widespread acclaim as a judge on the reality TV series Project Runway. He and Le Pere, who have been married since 2011, also own a Manhattan penthouse and a 2.25-acre beachfront estate on Florida’s Longboat Key.

The listing, which will be one of the most expensive ever sold on Fire Island if it gets close to its $6.3 million asking price, is held by Meg Smith and Nate Larson of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty.
