The search for Hermès’s new creative director of menswear has (rather quickly) come to an end.
Grace Wales Bonner, a British fashion designer, has snagged the coveted job, the fashion house announced on Tuesday. Wales Bonner will take over the role from Véronique Nichanian, who sat at the helm for 37 years before stepping down last week. Her appointment comes at a time where, amid a flurry of changes among industry leadership, few women have been charged with leading menswear divisions.
“I am deeply honored to be entrusted with the role of Creative Director of Hermès Men’s Ready-to-Wear,” Wales Bonner said in a statement. “It is a dream realized to embark on this new chapter, following in a lineage of inspired craftspeople and designers. I wish to express my gratitude to Pierre-Alexis Dumas and Axel Dumas for the opportunity to bring my vision to this magical house.”
The Brit has been making waves on the fashion scene since the launch of her eponymous line in 2014, right after graduating from the acclaimed Central Saint Martins in London. Wales Bonner also has plenty of accolades under her belt: In 2016, she snagged Wales Bonner snagged LMVH’s Young Designer Prize, and in 2021, she received the CFDA Award for International Men’s Designer of the Year. More recently, she nabbed the British Menswear Designer of the Year prize at the 2024 Fashion Awards.
Wales Bonner takes inspiration from African diaspora, using louche tailoring to craft her pieces. Her creations most recently made an appearance at the 2025 Met Gala, with celebs such as Lewis Hamilton and Jeff Goldblum rocking her looks. And Hermès is ready to take that styling into its folds, with Wales Bonner’s first collection for the brand making its debut in January 2027.
“Her take on contemporary fashion, craft, and culture will contribute to shaping Hermès men’s style, melding the house’s heritage with a confident look on the now,” Pierre-Alexis Dumas said in a statement.
Wales Bonner is just the latest appointment in the merry-go-round of changes among top fashion execs. Salvatore Ferragamo’s CEO, Macro Gobbetti, left the company earlier this year; Mattieu Blazy was appointed the artistic director of Chanel in 2024; and Jaden Smith was named Christian Louboutin’s first men’s creative director. And, of course, Jonathan Anderson is now the Dior’s creative director. And who knows, we may see more switch-ups before 2025 comes to a close.
