You’re gonna need a bigger display case.
Two long-lost props from Jaws are heading to auction this spring via Propstore, an announcement that comes on the heels of the 50th anniversary of the Steven Spielberg 1975 classic this year. You’ll be able to cast your bidding paddles for Quint’s (a.k.a Robert Shaw’s) original harpoon rifle and Quint’s fishing road, too, each of which has come back into the public eye after half a century.
Both the W.W. Greener Harpoon Rifle Mark and the Fenwick 130-pound fishing rod (with its production-used Senator 16/0 reel) underwent quite the ordeal on the Jaws set. The props were some of the few that survived the perilous filming experience, with saltwater, stunts, and a certain mechanical shark often destroyed the movie gear. With an estimate of $250,000 to $500,000, the harpoon rifle was used in the film by both Quint and Matt Hopper (Richard Dreyfuss) as they began to hunt down the famed great white. Identified on screen by its woodgrain, the collector’s item also comes with a matching case (which can be spotted in the film, too, aboard the Orca fishing boat) and a custom shark dart. The artifact was screen-matched and photo-matched, too, to confirm its legitimacy.

The fishing rod also made an appearance on the Orca, with Quint and Hopper brandishing it to take on the shark in an earlier moment in the film, the line tightening to signal that something strong was lurking below the surface. The rare piece, which was also screen matched, is estimated to fetch from $75,000 to $150,000 at auction.
“Jaws is a challenging title for memorabilia collectors—it is one of the most successful and beloved blockbusters of all time, but very few fully verified props or costumes have ever surfaced from the film. These two pieces are certainly some of the most significant ever offered at public auction, with the harpoon launcher bearing extra significance due to how extensively it is featured in the film and how much of a role it plays in the plot of the film,” Brandon Alinger, Propstore’s COO, said in a statement. “In our 30 years in the prop and costume industry, this is the single finest Jaws piece Propstore has ever seen. Its appearance now, at the film’s 50th anniversary, makes this rediscovery all the more remarkable.”
To snag the props for yourself, keep an eye out for Propstore’s Spring Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction this March. Happy hunting.
