After almost a decade of ownership, Dan Mindel is ready to hand over the keys to his blissful estate in the picturesque mountains of Hawaii. The Hollywood cinematographer’s modern Bali-inspired residence has just popped up for sale on Kauai‘s magical North Shore in the town of Kilauea, asking a dash under $4.5 million. Tiffany Spencer and Ben Welborn of Hawai’i Life share the listing.
Mindel, who is probably most known for his work with director J.J. Abrams on Mission: Impossible III, as well as several Star Trek and Star Wars films, and his wife, Lisa, paid $1.6 million in 2016 for the property, which is secluded beyond a gated driveway on a little more than two acres adjacent to 1,000-plus acres of conservation land.

Completed in 2006 but recently renovated, the three-bedroom, four-bath dwelling comes complete with imported Indonesian hardwood, Italian terrazzo floors, vaulted wood-beam ceilings, and custom triangular windows. Highlights include a living area that wraps around an eat-in island, which is part of a kitchen sporting teak-hued cabinetry, honed-granite countertops, and Bosch, Viking, and Sub-Zero appliances.
Transom-topped sliding glass doors spill out to a 1,200-square-foot covered Ipe wood lanai ideal for alfresco lounging and entertaining amid views of the lush green mountains, and elsewhere is a primary suite sporting a polished stone-clad bath with access to an outdoor shower. There’s also a detached barn with two offices, a loft, a workshop, a bath, and an another covered lanai.

Mindel, who is currently working on Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, told the New York Post that he was drawn to the home’s natural light and “shifting colors” that change throughout the day. “I’ve spent my life traveling and living in many different places around the world, and when my wife and I found Kauai’s North Shore, this home felt like an extension of who we are,” he said.
“Here, the nights are silent, the skies are dark, and there’s an incredible freedom that comes with being fully immersed in nature and letting the island guide your days,” he added. “It’s a weightless, nurturing way to exist with no outside noise, no stress, just a natural reset every time you return.”
