An American stockbroker from the early 1900s and an Italian billionaire might agree on plenty over tea, including a stately manor built in 1916 for Charles Henschel Thieriot (c. 1880-1941) along Long Island, N.Y.’s esteemed Gold Coast and later owned by former Brooks Brothers CEO Claudio Del Vecchio.
The Muttontown mansion dubbed Cedar Hill was originally built as a summer residence and is recognized as an original Gold Coast estate. Renowned architect James O’Connor designed the 13,000-square-foot brick house on Mill River Road, which stretches out over eight acres of gated park-like grounds. Shawn Elliott and Zach Elliott of Nest Seekers International are co-listing agents of the historic residence that includes access to English gardens, a heated gunite pool, a tennis court, a putting green, and a heated three-car garage.

Now listed for $10.75 million, Del Vecchio and his wife, Debra Ann, bought the property in 2012 for $7.5 million, according to records, and the nine-bedroom, eight-bathroom manse sold for $200,000 less in December 2024 to its current seller, Mehmet Sengulen, who renovated and restored it. Think electrical upgrades, restored fireplaces, an upgraded pool infrastructure, masonry restoration, and over $100,000 spent on surveillance systems for safety and privacy.

Sengulen told The New York Post that he planned to move in with his wife and four kids, and Zach Elliott confirmed to Robb Report that “he did all that restoration for himself and his family” but “after having a heart-to-heart,” decided they love their current home in a nearby town and have opted to stay put.

Despite the estate’s modernization, the Smiros & Smiros-designed great room crowning the heated garage stands out as its most Old World-like space with a wooden vaulted ceiling and fireplace that features a stone chimney. “It looks like it belongs in Aspen,” Zach shares. “Or like a big family room in a beautiful hotel.” Other highlights include a dining room with refinished hardwood floors, a paneled library, a wine cellar, a gym, a dog spa, and a primary suite featuring a marble bathroom with heated floors. An original vault with a steel door in the house’s basement has also been transformed into a panic room.
Given the size of the property and its mature foliage, it’s a sight to behold year-round. But if you ask the owner, he’ll say the fall is insane. Elliot confirms, “When you pull up through those gates and the trees are full and they’re changing colors, it’s like out of a movie.”
