This year has been all about America’s 250th birthday, but one Charleston Single has got the United States beat by 16 years.
Located in the historic South of Broad neighborhood, the three-story abode dates back to 1760. Original details like coffered ceilings and rich wood paneling have been preserved, but modern, minimalist design has been thoughtfully woven in. Despite a rather slim profile, the residence packs a lot into 3,600 square feet.

The kitchen flows through to the modern family room and the garden out back.

On the ground floor, the entrance is flanked by the stately living room on one side and the fireplace-warmed formal dining room on the other. These rooms both nod to the home’s history, while the main living spaces feel a bit more contemporary. The centerpiece is the expansive kitchen, outfitted with a La Cornue range, Sub-Zero refrigeration, two dishwashers, a wine tower, and a scullery.

The kitchen flows through to the more casual family room, sporting a wooden wall with built-ins and space for a mounted TV. French doors at the far end spill open to the garden and pool area, with landscaping courtesy of Sheila Wertimer. Loungers surround the pool, and there’s both a back patio with umbrella seating and a side patio for alfresco dining.

The primary bedroom spills open to a private balcony.

Upstairs, a private den wrapped in floral wallpaper leads to the primary suite, which is also accessible via elevator. The bedroom opens out to a private balcony, while the bathroom includes a soaking tub, a steam shower, and heated floors. Additional little luxuries abound, with custom-designed closets, a laundry station, and a beverage bar with a Wolf espresso machine.
Another en suite bedroom, currently set up as a home gym, sits on the second floor. Up on the third floor are two more en suite bedrooms. The home—on the market for a hair under $7 million with Mary Lou Wertz at Maison Real Estate—is rounded out with an extra powder room and two off-street parking spaces.
