The original Games of Thrones has been off the air for about seven years, but that doesn’t mean the dragon, zombie, sex, and murder-filled HBO series has disappeared from our TVs. So just as there are new series in the Game of Thrones extended universe continue to drop, the whisky collabs continual as well—this time from Kyrö, a Finnish distillery you may not have heard of that makes some excellent gin and rye whisky.
Back in 2018, Diageo put out a series of Game of Thrones-inspired single malts from eight of its distilleries representing the series’ different families. These included whiskies from Dalwhinnie, Oban, Clynelish, Talisker, and Lagavulin. This new release focuses on rye grain, however, something that the Fins know a thing or two about. Kyrö, which was founded in 2012, has been entirely focused on using malted rye instead of malted barley to make its whisky since it released its first expression in 2019. Sometimes the whisky is peated and sometimes it’s unpeated, but it’s always made from rye and aged in a variety of different types of casks.
The timing of the release of these new whiskies, which are inspired by the House Targaryen, was well planned. This is an official partnership between Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products and Kyrö that is meant to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Game of Thrones and the U.K. premiere of the third season of the spin-off show, House of the Dragon. The first whisky in the duo is called Game of Thrones x Kyrö: Whisky of Fire (93.2 proof). It is made from 100 percent rye grain that has been wood and peat smoked, and aged in ex-bourbon and new American oak barrels before being finished in ex-rum casks. Tasting notes describe some sweet caramel and orange peel flavors, along with a healthy dose of smoke on the palate. The second whisky is called Game of Thrones x Kyrö: Whisky of Blood (92 proof). This is also made from 100 percent malted rye, but the grain has not been smoked, and it’s aged in ex-bourbon and French oak casks. Tasting notes list dried cherries, red currant, chocolate, and oak on the palate.
Both whiskies are priced at $70, and can be pre-ordered directly from the Kyrö website now, with shipping expected to begin in July. They will also be available to order from Master of Malt starting on Monday, June 22.
