Widely regarded as one of California’s most important architects, Bernard Maybeck is revered for his rich designs ranging from bohemian clubhouses and woodland residences. The American creative is also the mind behind one of the Golden State’s most iconic landmarks, the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. Distinctive in its own right is the chalet-style house he built 120 years ago in the City by the Bay for a prominent figure in the timber industry.
San Francisco lumber baron J.H. Hopps tapped Maybeck to craft the hillside abode, named Grayoaks, which sprung to life in 1906. The timber titan played a role in shaping Northern California’s lumber economy during the state’s rapid industrial expansion. So naturally, the abode pays homage to his ties to the industry with its rustic redwood-clad design, an important early example of First Bay Tradition and Arts & Crafts architectural styles.

Grayoaks remains Maybeck’s first residence in Ross; the home was built when the small town was transitioning from undeveloped woodland to an exclusive country enclave. As one of Marin County’s most architecturally significant estates, it sits on 1.24 acres with lush landscaping by Michael Yandell. A restoration and expansion of the home was completed in 2012 but many of its signature features have been preserved, including Dutch entry doors, boxed Douglas fir beams, board-and-batten redwood walls, wood-latticed windows, overhanging chalet eaves, and grand fireplaces across its living areas.

Noted Bay Area architect Miranda Abrams reimagined interiors for the 5,508-square-foot abode, blending warmth and sophistication for a modern feel. A painting by abstract expressionist Jordan Betten adds color to the gallery accessed via lower-level carport entry. There’s also a guest lounge and one of five bedrooms on the same floor. The living room, meanwhile, sprawls out on the main level with a large stone fireplace that acts as a bold accent for the space.

Hardwood flooring spills into the chef’s kitchen nearby, which is anchored by a 10-foot Carrera marble island. The dining room sits just ahead with space for 10 people to enjoy meals and sweeping vistas beyond a wall of French doors. A vaulted family room with built-ins is steps away on the same level, while the primary suite with rich wood finishes and a seven-foot fireplace stretches out on the upper level. Its skylight en-suite with a sauna opens out to a discreet patio with a hot tub for unwinding.
Another spa and large swimming pool are accessible on the sun-drenched grounds, where there is alfresco dining space for 12 people, a stone fireplace, and terraced gardens. Grayoaks sold last August for $10.65 million, property records show. It is now available with Margot Edde and David Cohen of City Real Estate for $12.95 million.
