David Cooley, the founder and former owner of The Abbey—an iconic West Hollywood venue known for inspiring the Chappell Roan hit “Pink Pony Club”—has also built a reputation for buying, restoring, and reselling architecturally significant homes. In 2023, he realized a $4.2 million profit from the sale of a revamped 1920s home in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles that was previously occupied by oil tycoon G. Allan, silent film actress Katherine MacDonald, and I Love Lucy star Vivian Vance. Afterward, he turned his attention to a new project: a sprawling midcentury residence in the Trousdale Estates area of Beverly Hills.

Cooley engaged L.A. designer Chad Waterhouse to reimagine the interior architecture, furnishings, and landscape of the flat-roofed pavilion, which was originally designed almost seven decades ago by the late architect Marvin Berman, a protege of the legendary Richard Neutra. Three years later, Cooley now has his entertainment-ready showpiece up for sale at a speck under $7.4 million, which is almost $2 million over what he originally paid. Tucked away on a nearly half-acre parcel fronted by a large boulder displaying “1960,” both the home’s address on Loma Vista Drive and the year it was built, the stone-accented structure showcases four bedrooms and a matching number of bathrooms in roughly 4,000 square feet across a single level. The refined contemporary interiors are punctuated throughout with terrazzo floors, warm wood paneling, and rough-hewn stone pillars.

Ebony-hued double doors sporting circular silver handles pivot into an expansive entrance gallery with a built-in planter and walls of glass overlooking a graveled courtyard. From there, a soffit-ceilinged family room has a built-in wet bar and sliding glass doors spilling out to a terrace, while a formal dining room is clad in geometric terracotta wallpaper with a maze-like pattern. A sleek kitchen features a large marble-topped eat-in island, Viking appliances, a green leather banquette curving around an oval pedestal table, and a pass-through window opening to the backyard.

Other highlights include a living room anchored by a massive travertine floating-hearth fireplace set against a gray brick wall plus a secluded primary suite with dual closets and baths. Like most rooms in the house, the bedroom flows outdoors, where the hedge-lined grounds are dotted with succulents and pines and host a sculptural fountain and a newly renovated swimming pool flanked by a fire pit conversation area. There’s also an automated smart-home system, as well as solar panels and an attached three-car garage with an EV charger.

Cooley still owns a midcentury ranch-style house directly overlooking Malibu’s Las Tunas Beach that he bought from actress Emma Stone in 2022 for $4.4 million. He also maintains a custom-designed mountainside retreat in the Coachella Valley that is often referred to as the Night House or the Cielo Rock House.
