Jaguar Land Rover just made history—but not the kind they wanted to make.

The beleaguered automaker just issued a recall for over 170,000 hybrid SUVs because of an electrical issue that can cause them to lose drive power. To make matters worse, there is currently no fix for the issue.

According to the official recall report, which was published on April 17, the source of the problem is the DC-DC converter in the 48-volt hybrid system of the recalled vehicles, which can fail due to a faulty boost control microchip. Within 10 seconds of the failure, the vehicle will display a “Stop Safely Electrical Fault Detected” message, and its 12-volt system will begin losing charge. If the driver does not obey the warning, the vehicle will eventually shift into neutral, display a gearbox failure warning, and come to a stop. Once it does, the engine will shut down and the battery will eventually lose the power needed to keep other systems, including the exterior lights, running, increasing the risk of a collision.

The notice states that 170,169 vehicles with hybrid systems built between November 2020 and January 2024 are affected by the issue, making the recall the biggest since Jaguar and Land Rover merged in 2008. The affected Jaguars include 2021 to 2022 E-Pace and the 2021 to 2024 I-Pace. The affected Land Rovers include the 2020-2024 Defender, the 2021 to 2024 Discovery, the 2020 Discovery Sport, the 2020 to 2024 Range Rover, the 2019 to 2024 Range Rover Sport, the 2020 to 2023 Range Rover Evoque, and the 2021 to 2024 Range Rover Velar.

The NHTSA notes that JLR first became aware of the issue in September 2024 and concluded that it did not “did not pose an unreasonable risk to safety.” But following additional reports, the agency told the automaker that it viewed the matter as “one of a safety nature rather than customer satisfaction.” The company has received 5,952 reports involving DC-DC converter replacements, but these have resulted in no accidents or injuries. As of press time, JLR is still working to fix the issue and there is no timeline for when it will be solved.

The recall is the latest issue to beset JLR. Over the last year alone, the company lost hundreds of millions of pounds because of manufacturing issue caused by a cyber-attack, delayed the debut of the next-generation Jaguar EV, and was forced to temporarily pause production at its Solihull factory in England because of a fire.
