A Beauty Mogul’s Harry Gesner-Designed House Lists for $28 Million

Dwellings by Harry Gesner are hot commodities, often snapped up for a premium soon after they go up for sale. In the past few years, a couple of neighboring oceanfront properties designed by the surfer-turned-architect in his adopted hometown of Malibu—the iconic Wave House and his personal residence, Sandcastle House—sold to venture capitalist Joshua Kushner and his supermodel wife, Karlie Kloss, for nearly $30 million and tech entrepreneur Jason Fried for $13 million, respectively.

Now another equally striking and original abode by the self-taught midcentury maverick has hit the market in the perennially chic Trousdale Estates area of Beverly Hills for the first time in over a decade. The asking price is a dash under $28 million, with the listing held by Trey Alligood of The Alligood Group at Douglas Elliman.

Completed in 1970 and acquired in 2014 for $6.25 million by Mezhgan Hussainy, a Los Angeles-based makeup artist, beauty entrepreneur, and cofounding partner of Product Society, the home has five (and possibly six) bedrooms and half a dozen bathrooms across two levels. Encompassing roughly 6,500 square feet, the gently restored living space retains Gesner’s trademark design elements, including stone floors, massive fireplaces, vast walls of glass, and a dramatic sculptural roofline.

Beyond a secluded cul-de-sac and gated driveway, an all-glass entryway leads into an upper level hosting a formal dining area with mirrored walls, a family room, and an atrium-style Poliform kitchen and a breakfast nook opening to an alfresco dining terrace. Steps descend to a sunken living room, which showcases a massive asymmetric fireplace and a laminated wood-beamed ceiling arching over a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows. Sitting just outside is an infinity pool and spillover spa with city, canyon, and ocean views extending to Catalina Island.

A primary suite on the main level flaunts a massive rock fireplace and dual closets and baths, while a trio of en-suite guest bedrooms includes one that is currently outfitted as an office with a wet bar. A skylit spiral staircase heads downstairs, where there are two additional bedrooms that share a bath, along with a second kitchen and a screening room. The promontory lot, which spans over half an acre atop a granite outcropping, also has an attached carport with room for two vehicles.

The home, newly staged for sale by Francesca Grace, is featured in the 2012 book Houses of the Sundown Sea, which documents the late architect’s vision through plans, drawings, and photographs.
