Gary Matthews Jr.’s SoCal House Lists for $22 Million

Back in 2010, veteran professional baseball outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. doled out $3 million for a vacant lot in the coveted Corona del Mar neighborhood of Orange County’s Newport Beach, about an hour south of Los Angeles.

The retired MLB star, who played with the L.A. Angels for three seasons from 2007 to 2009, went on to enlist architect Carlton Graham and builders Steve Davidson Construction and Tom Waters to create a two-story house completed in 2014. Now, after trying his hand at selling the place a few times before, he’s tossed the residence back on the market for just under $22 million, with Casey Lesher and Mondana Matthews of Christie’s International Real Estate, Southern California, holding the listing.

Perched on a blufftop parcel spanning a third of an acre in the desirable Irvine Terrace enclave on the ocean side of Coast Highway, the modern stone-accented structure offers four en suite bedrooms, five full bathrooms, and a pair of powder rooms in roughly 6,200 square feet imbued with a relaxed, California Coastal aesthetic. Two bright, airy levels showcase limestone floors and white oak ceilings, plus front-row views of the Newport Harbor, Balboa and Catalina islands, and the Pacific Ocean.

A large glass door off a private courtyard pivots into an upper-level entry foyer, which leads to a spacious great room anchored by a living area sporting a linear fireplace, a dining area, and a kitchen outfitted with premium stainless appliances and a gray waterfall island with seating for three. Also on this floor is a fireside primary suite highlighted by a sleek bath with dual vanities, a freestanding oval soaking tub, and indoor-outdoor showers.

Rounding it all off is the lower level, which has a lounge and media room equipped with a seated wet bar and accordion-style doors opening to a terraced backyard hosting an infinity-edge pool, a raised spa, and a barbecue station. There’s also a glass-encased office lined with built-in shelves, as well as a climate-controlled wine cellar housing a full-size beverage refrigerator.

Matthews, 51, is the son of former Major Leaguer turned broadcaster Gary Matthews Sr. Now a real estate investor, the younger Matthews played professionally from 1999 to 2010, launching his career with the San Diego Padres and going on to play for the Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers, L.A. Angels of Anaheim, and New York Mets.
