Plenty of important race cars hit the block, but none of those can trace back to when Ayrton Senna‘s journey on the track began.
The car that the F1 legend drove in his first Formula 1 race, the 1984 Toleman TG183B, will be auctioned off by RM Sotheby’s in Monaco later this month. The legendary driver didn’t just make his debut in the vehicle; he was also behind its wheel when he earned his very first points one race later.
Even a legend like Senna doesn’t arrive fully formed. In his first season in F1, the then 24 year old finished ninth in the driver’s standings, his worst finish during his 10 full seasons in motorsports’ premier competition. Still, there were signs he would grow into the three-time champ he became, including podium finishes at the Monaco, British, and Portuguese Grand Prix. Senna drove the car up for sale, chassis. No. 5, in the season’s first four races, in Brazil, South Africa, Belgium, and San Marino. He was forced to retire in the season opener, but finished sixth in races numbers two and three, claiming points in both instances, before failing the qualify for number four. Following that race, Toleman would replace TG183B with a new race car, TG184.

Chassis no. 5 looks identical to how it did during that trio of races. The triple-winged racer wears an eye-catching red-white-and-blue racing livery, with sponsor decals for brands like Segafredo Zanetti coffee, Pirelli tires, and Sergio Tacchini sportswear. The TG183B is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder Hart 415 T engine that is capable of making around 750 hp brand new and reaching speeds in excess of 186 mph when brand new. The car is more than 42 years old at this point, but has been well-maintained and features a rebuilt gearbox.
It’s also ready to be taken out for a spin, according to the auction listing. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly drove it at Silverstone in 2024 to mark 40 years since Senna’s F1 debut and 30 years since his tragic passing. It’s also eligible for the Monaco Historic Grand Prix and other classic F1 events.

Intrigued? Senna’s TG183B will cross the block as part of RM Sotheby’s annual Monaco sale, which will be held on Saturday, April 25. The auction house expects the race car to command between $3.25 million and $4.4 million.
