The Refreshed 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLS Arrives With a More Powerful V-8

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class isn’t the only company’s only flagship getting a makeover.

The German luxury marque has just unveiled the refreshed version of the saloon’s SUV equivalent, the GLS. The largest member of the brand’s lineup is getting a revised look, new tech, and more power for 2027.

The new “S-Class of SUVs” won’t look dramatically different from its predecessor. The biggest changes can be found up front, where the fascia has been redesigned with an even bigger grille and more prominent headlamps. The lighting package has also been fully reworked, now incorporating a three-pointed star motif throughout. The updated model is also available with an illuminated standing star ornament, which is a first for one of the brand’s SUVs.

Inside, the front of the cabin is dominated by Mercedes’s massive MBUX Superscreen. The feature, which comes standard, spans from one end of the dashboard to the other and includes a trio of individual 12.3-inch displays, all of which are powered by MB.OS, the brand’s new operating system. The software, which will get regular over-the-air updates, has integrates AI in new ways, though it is currently unclear how this will affect or change the driving experience—if at all. The full-size GLS also comes standard with three rows—meaning it can sit either six or four—and passengers as tall as 6’4” can fit comfortably in the back.

The most potent version of the updated model, the GLS 580, features a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 with a flat-plane crank. That feature is more common in high-revving sports cars than SUVs, but is present here to help the vehicle meet future emission standards, according to Car and Driver. The mill makes 530 hp and 553 ft lbs of torque, compared to the 510 hp and 538 ft lbs of torque made by the 2026 model. SUVs, The GLS 450, meanwhile, features a 3.0-liter inline-six that makes 375 hp and 413 ft lbs of torque. The GLS 580 can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, while the GLS 450 can do the same in 5.4 seconds. All models, as should be expected, come with 4MATIC all-wheel drive.

The 2027 model will come standard with Mercedes’s aptly named Airmatic air suspension, but GLS 580 buyers can opt for E-Active Body Control. The system uses five multi-core processors and cloud data from other Mercedes out on the road to provide the smoothest ride possible.

Mercedes has yet to say when the refreshed GLS will launch, but is part of its next model year class. We’re also waiting to find out how much it will cost, but we imagine it’ll be more than the current models, which start at $90,250 (GLS 450) and $116,150 (GLS 580).
