The Koenigsegg Gemera Has Finally Gone Into Production


Good things really do come to those who wait.

The Koenigsegg Gemera has finally gone into production six years after it was first unveiled, the brand announced last week. It has of course changed some since we last saw it, but it remains a four-seater, making it the closest thing the hypercar class has to a family vehicle.

Koenigsegg first shared images of the Gemera online in early March 2020, following the cancelation of Geneva Motor Show due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The car was unlike anything we’d seen from the Swedish marque, mainly because its cabin was spacious enough to fit not two, but four adults. It also featured an unusual powertrain, which paired a 2.0-liter inline-three dubbed the Tiny Friendly Giant, or TFG, with a trio of electric motors that the automaker said would make 1,677 hp and 2,581 ft lbs of torque.

That last feature is the one that has changed the most since the hypercar was first announced. In 2023, the company said the setup’s three electric motors would be replaced by a single, more powerful unit. This reduced complexity, but also power, knocking total output down to a still very respectable 1,400 hp and 1,364 ft lbs of torque. Perhaps realizing people wouldn’t be thrilled about the power downgrade, the company also announced that the car would be available with a hybrid-assisted 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 paired with the same electric motor that makes 2,300 hp and 2,028 ft lbs of torque.

That move, which may have seemed prudent at the time, ended up killing off the TFG’s chances. Later that same year, Koenigsegg announced that interest in the three-cylinder Gemera was close to nill, and thus the car would only be available with the electrified V-8 when it finally went into production.

Other than that, the $1.7 million Gemera remains basically the same roomy hypercar it was back in 2020—and that includes its exclusivity. Koenigsegg still plans to build just 300 examples, all of which have already been spoken for. The same goes for the sold-out CC850, which will be built at the same time as the Gemera, and the Jesko-based Sadair’s Spear, which is set to follow its older siblings into production.
