Before leading lady Jenn Tran jetted overseas with her love interests in 2024’s Season 21 of the ABC dating series The Bachelorette, a first-night meetup took place at the sprawling Hummingbird Nest Ranch in Santa Susana, about 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles, where the eligible men arrived toting a couple of puppies—and even a fire extinguisher.

And though things didn’t quite work out for Tran—her proposal to Devin Strader fell apart shortly after the pair were engaged—the picturesque property certainly serves as a prime spot for conjuring up some romance, as well as an ideal backdrop for films and TV shows.

The idyllic setting notably had a memorable role in the romantic comedy Book Club as the Arizona ranch of Andy Garcia (Diane Keaton’s boyfriend, Mitchell) in the 2018 film. The refuge was love at first sight for production designer Rachel O’Toole, per Architectural Digest. “It was just so perfect with the archways and the way that the light dapples through the yard and the pool,” she said. “Standing at the front door you can see all the way through the kitchen into a bathroom, through an arched brick passageway and then outside through leaded glass to a fountain. I said to Bill [director Bill Holderman], ‘We shouldn’t waste our time looking elsewhere because this is it.’”

The list of productions shot there goes on and on—from The Biggest Loser to Sex and the City: The Movie. Doing double duty as an event venue, the place has also been the locale for several celebrity weddings, including actress Kaley Cuoco and tennis star Ryan Sweeting and Vanderpump Rules stars Scheana Marie and Michael Shay, both couples of whom are now divorced. 

The 124-acre estate is the brainchild of Metro Networks founder David I. Saperstein, who purchased a roughly 124-acre plot of land in the hills of Simi Valley in 2000 for his second wife, Suzanne. He subsequently enlisted architect Rick Robertson to build a 17,000-square-foot Spanish-style villa and later added guest and staff houses, equestrian facilities, numerous pools, a large pond, a helipad, a solar farm, and parking for up to 400 vehicles. Sitting Bull Cottage, the original ranch house dating to the 1920s, has been restored.

Saperstein filed for divorce from Suzanne in 2005 and put the ranch on the market two years later for $75 million. With no takers, he relisted the place for nearly $50 million and finally sold it in late 2015 for $33 million to Vietnam-born billionaire Kieu Hoang, who earned his fortune in plasma-derived medicine products. Though he loves the property’s “sense of history and character,” Hoang has now decided to sell because he wants to focus his energy on renewable energy, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Anchoring the canyon compound, which is surrounded by olive groves, vineyards, water features, natural rock formations, and mountains, is the primary dwelling, which is marked by barrel tile roofing, white stucco walls, arched doorways, curving columns, tiled staircases, and detailed ironwork. Because it was built for Suzanne Saperstein, an avid horse lover and rider, it also comes with a 44-stall barn, a trio of show rings, and a regulation-size polo field.

The asking price is $78 million, with Byron Wood of Sotheby’s International Realty, Westlake Village Brokerage, holding the listing.
