Not everyone likes taking their work home with them. But for those who do, a good home office is key. That’s where one San Francisco live-work residence comes in.
Situated in the city’s South of Market neighborhood, the industrial building dates back more than a century, to 1924. However, a multimillion-dollar renovation has turned it into the most modern of structures: The ground floor is a full-on workspace with both private offices and co-working desks. Upstairs, meanwhile, you’ll find a two-bedroom living space. Thankfully, there’s at least some separation between the work and play aspects here.

The ground floor includes co-working space, private offices, and conference rooms.

The seller of the $3.9 million abode is venture capitalist and tech founder Daniel Darling. As a managing partner at the firm Focal, he’s focused on pre-seed software startups in the U.S. and Canada. The SoMa property was perfect for him, then, as he used the ground floor as a creative headquarters for startup founders and investors. You can easily imagine a lot of work getting done here, but there’s also a wet bar that can be used for entertaining clients.

The loft-like living quarters nod to the building’s industrial heritage with details like white-washed brick walls, but the space has been thoughtfully updated with mod cons. The open great room features a light-filled living area and a chic kitchen. Mint-green cabinetry adds a pop of color, while a small dining table nearby offers space for four. Down the hall, a minimalistic bedroom sports built-in shelving and a punchy red-orange walk-in.

An open kitchen and living room anchor the residence.

Up the floating staircase, a second great room can serve as a lounge or another bedroom. As it’s currently configured, there’s a wet bar, a living space, and a built-in desk with floor-to-ceiling shelving. A cozy reading nook features tufted seating, and the full bathroom sports vivid red subway tiling throughout.
From this floor, folding glass doors spill open to a private rooftop terrace with city views. You can simply take in the surroundings from the lounge area or show off your skills at the built-in gas grill. Enjoy your meal at the outdoor dining table, and don’t forget to whip up some drinks to bring outside.
The live-work residence is on the market with Howard Epstein at City Real Estate San Francisco. And while it’s currently designed with just two bedrooms, if you feel like undergoing another full-scale reno, it can include four bedrooms and five bathrooms in total.
