Caterham is a British automaker known for making the kinds of cars everyone loves to think about buying, if only they had the chance. The brand’s latest machine falls squarely in that camp as well, a lightweight, track-loving roadster that’s a celebration of a 1951 race car driven by Stirling Moss.
The Caterham Seven HWM Edition is a version of the Caterham Seven, which is one of the greatest sports cars of all time. Just 19 examples of the new model will be produced, making it both exclusive and a conversation piece for the owners. The car also pays homage to another much-discussed auto: The HWM Edition is a celebration of the HWM-Alta race car, which won several races in the 1950s and even more podiums at various grands prix, many of them with Stirling Moss behind the wheel.

The HWM Edition is painted HWM green, which is not just inspired by the 1951 race car but a hue that was made after that car was scanned. The grille, louvres, roll bar, suspension, and headlight brackets are also built with the HWM-Alta in mind. On the inside, dials, switches, the steering wheel, handbrake and gear knob are also inspired by the HWM-Alta.
As for grunt, the model is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 210 brake horsepower, mated to a five-speed manual transmission. That may not sound like much in the modern age of Toyota Camrys having more than 300 horsepower, but the Seven makes up for it in lightness, weighing well under one ton. That results in a zero-to-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 136 mph.

“We are immensely proud to celebrate HWM’s remarkable history as a works team and grand prix car constructor,” Guy Jenner, HWM’s CEO, said in a statement. “This project has given us a unique opportunity to tell the story of how a small outfit from Walton-on-Thames took on the greatest teams in European grand prix racing during one of motor racing’s most inspiring eras.”
The Caterham Seven is priced starting at 57,990 British pounds, or around $78,000, with options that can push that price higher.
