When filmmakers Emrhys Cooper and Donal Brophy relocated from New York to Southern California, they didn’t settle in Los Angeles but instead snapped up a 1970s home sitting 6,000 feet above sea level in the secluded mountain town of Idyllwild, not too far from Palm Springs. The two then went about completely renovating the two-level spread, turning it into a colorful retreat they describe as “James Bond villain meets exiled Italian count.” They’re now spinning the home on the market for $1.4 million, including about $100,000 worth of furniture.
The three-bedroom, three-bath residence sits on a private ridge with sweeping views of Mount San Jacinto in the distance. While it appears relatively simple from the outside, sporting a teal wood exterior, the home has been zhuzhed up with cinematic flair befitting of the creative duo. A tomato-red front door, for example, welcomes you into the main level, where a hypnotic black-and-white tiled floor runs from the entryway into the kitchen. The aquamarine color scheme continues here, and there’s a cozy breakfast nook in the corner surrounded by bay windows.

Opposite the kitchen is the living room, which has been divided into two discrete spaces: One is anchored by a cherry-red fireplace, while the other includes a massive U-shaped couch perfect for curling up with a good book or watching a movie. Glass doors at the back of the great room fold away to the multilevel deck, where there’s plenty of space for outdoor dining and storytelling around a fire. A cedar spa and sauna can be used to warm up on chilly winter evenings, too.

The primary suite is conveniently situated on the main level. Alongside the moody blue bedroom is an expansive sitting room that Cooper and Brophy have outfitted with a green claw-foot bathtub and an antique writing desk that dates back to the 1800s. Downstairs, meanwhile, the couple has created an entertainment parlor complete with a billiards room and a pub-style wet bar that harkens back to their Irish and British heritage.

Cooper and Brophy are both entertainment industry multihyphenates who have written, produced, and acted in multiple films and TV shows. Cooper’s résumé includes credits such as Mamma Mia! and the long-running British soap Coronation Street, while Brophy has appeared in series like Blue Bloods. The two now run a production company, Idyllwild Pictures, which they fittingly founded out of their chic mountain home.
