Architect J.R. Davidson wasn’t as well-known as some of his more vaunted midcentury peers like Richard Neutra, R.M. Schindler, and Frank Lloyd Wright, but he nonetheless helped define California Modernism in the 1930s and 1940s. In fact, he was referred to by architectural historian David Gebhard as “the one designer in the thirties who most elegantly brought the European modern and California styles together.”
After relocating from his homeland of Germany to Los Angeles in the early 1920s, he worked for architect Robert D. Farquhar and as an assistant to MGM art director Cedric Gibbons, who designed the Oscar statuette. He went on to open his own studio, completing commercial projects such as the interiors of the Cocoanut Grove nightclub at Wilshire Boulevard’s Ambassador Hotel. He also spread out to the residential arena, most notably crafting the Thomas Mann House, along with three homes for Arts & Architecture magazine’s groundbreaking Case Study House program.

Then there’s this sprawling property in the suburban San Fernando Valley neighborhood of Encino, boasting Davidson’s signature indoor/outdoor floor plan. Last sold in spring 2017 for about $3.6 million to an entertainment industry executive, the glass-lined pavilion is now available for $4.85 million after first hitting the market last October for a dash under $5 million. Andrew Manning and Gilbert Spiegel of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties hold the listing.
Built in 1939 and known as the Berkson House, after its original owners, the place was captured by famed photographer Julius Schulman (the images are displayed in an archived collection at the Getty Center), and most recently, portrayed Jack Bauer’s residence in the TV show 24. Recently reimagined and updated, the single-story abode offers five bedrooms and six baths across roughly 5,800 square feet with a mix of slate and hardwood floors, plus walls of glass opening to patios overlooking the surrounding treetop views.

Among the highlights is a fireside living room, a formal dining room, and a family room that wrap around an eat-in kitchen outfitted with custom Poliform cabinetry, honed Italian marble countertops, Miele and Sub-Zero appliances, and a butler’s pantry with an integrated coffee bar. Elsewhere is a media room, an office, and a secluded primary suite sporting a fireplace, a large walk-in closet, and a luxe bath.
Rounding it all off are the manicured grounds, which sit beyond walls and an automated gate on nearly two-thirds of an acre and are spotlighted by a grassy lawn that flows to a swimming pool and a spillover spa flanked by a fire pit.
