It’s been almost a year since Gene Hackman died at age 95. Now a sprawling New Mexico estate best known as the longtime home of the two-time Oscar-winning actor and his late wife, Betsy Arakawa, has surfaced for sale at a dash under $6.3 million, with Tara S. Earley and Ricky Allen of Sotheby’s International Realty sharing the listing.
Hackman, a versatile leading man famed for his performance as Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in The French Connection, and Arakawa, a pianist, acquired the hilltop property overlooking views stretching from the Jemez Mountains to Colorado in the 1990s for its picturesque locale. The couple then converted an existing 1950s house into a massive but cozy “part pueblo, part colonial New Mexico, part Spanish Baroque” residence in collaboration with a team that included builder Doug McDowell and architects Harry Daple and Stephen Samuelson of Studio Arquitectura.

Resting on over 53 acres surrounded by piñon trees in the gated Santa Fe Summit development northeast of the city, the entire spread, completed in 1997, includes a main home, a guesthouse, and a studio for a combined total of four bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, and a trio of powder rooms across roughly 13,000 square feet that was recently staged for sale.
A flagstone walkway leads to the stone and olive green stucco primary dwelling, which is introduced by steel-framed glass windows and double doors notched into an arched entry. From there, the public spaces are anchored by an expansive fireside living area, a sunken dining room, and a study topped with a decorative coffered ceiling. The kitchen sports an eat-in island, stainless appliances, a butler’s pantry, and access to a wine cellar, while a primary suite comes with a separate office and dual closets and baths.
A gym and game and media rooms can be found on the lower level, a three-bedroom guesthouse comes with its own kitchen and living area, and a flexible studio can be used for creative pursuits or as additional guest accommodations. Topping it all off are the grounds, which host a swimming pool, a hot tub, and a putting green, plus garaging for up to six vehicles.

Both Hackman and Arakawa were found dead in the house last February, with investigators ruling that 65-year-old Arakawa died first from a respiratory illness linked to the hantavirus, and Hackman, who was in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease, passed away days later from severe heart disease.
The listing agents told The Wall Street Journal they are aware the property’s tragic past may deter certain potential purchasers. “There will be some buyers that are just averse to purchasing a property where a death has occurred,” Earley said. “There are other buyers for whom that doesn’t matter. We are selling the property on its virtues and all of the positives. We just priced it based on what we felt was the fair market value.”
