Actress Martha Plimpton’s Brooklyn House Sells for $2.6 Million

A little over a decade ago, Martha Plimpton acquired a historic Victorian residence in New York City’s Prospect Lefferts Gardens neighborhood, tucked away in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. There, in what she has referred to as her “dream come true” house, the Emmy-winning actress often used a 1979 edition of Marcella Hazan’s The Classic Italian Cook Book: The Art of Italian Cooking and the Italian Art of Eating to make Bolognese sauce on her beloved Ilve stove with tomatoes grown in her backyard. She also welcomed guests to stay in one of the three guest bedrooms, leading her to refer to the abode as “The Martha Plimpton House for Wayward Women and Divorcées.”

Plimpton, who had previously lived in the same rent-stabilized Upper West Side apartment building for the first four decades of her life, told The New York Times that she was immediately drawn to Prospect Lefferts Gardens and its tight-knit community. “Cobble Hill and Park Slope were a little too twee for me,” she said. “In this neighborhood, there are families of all ages, races and demographics.”

Fast-forward 12 years later, and the 1980s icon, probably best known for her role in the 1980s cult classic The Goonies, has parted ways with her longtime home amid a move to London. Records show it has officially traded hands for $2.65 million, which is around $1.3 million more than she paid for the place back in spring 2013 before undertaking a gut renovation. Pamela D’Arc of Compass held the listing.

Originally built in the early 1900s, the white wood-sided structure greets with an inviting front porch sporting Corinthian columns. Inside, four bedrooms and five baths are filtered across roughly 2,800 square feet of three-level living space adorned with hardwood floors, high ceilings, and decorative moldings. There’s also a finished basement.

A 1954 Baldwin baby grand piano in the dining room once belonged to Plimpton’s maternal grandmother, the pianist Martha Jane Williams.

Standing out on the main floor is a living room featuring a wood-burning fireplace flanked by built-in bookshelves, along with a formal dining room that opens to an alfresco dining deck and a lush garden below planted with fruit trees, vegetables, and roses. An all-white kitchen is outfitted with the aforementioned six-burner Ilve gas range with a grill, plus additional Miele and Sub-Zero appliances, marble countertops, a porcelain farmhouse sink, and a butcher block-topped eat-in island.

On the second floor are three sizable bedrooms, one boasting a wall of cedar closets and a marble bath with radiant-heated floors, dual sinks, and a clawfoot tub. The second bedroom has a bay window, and the third comes with a built-in desk and a windowed closet, with both sharing a hallway bath sporting a steam shower. A lofty, light-filled top level holds the primary suite, which could just as easily be used as a playroom or studio, while the basement has a laundry room and a half-bath.

Plimpton removed walls, raised the ceiling by three feet, and installed a bath with a clawfoot tub and a heated towel rack in her top-floor master bedroom.

The New York City native, who was born to actors Keith Carradine and Shelley Plimpton, made her feature film debut in the political thriller Rollover and went on to gain acclaim for her role as tomboy Stephanie “Stef” Steinbrenner in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 movie The Goonies. She’s also appeared on TV in The Good Wife and Raising Hope, and was nominated for three consecutive Tony Awards for her performances in the Broadway shows The Coast of UtopiaTop Girls, and Pal Joey.

Most recently, Plimpton starred alongside Mark Ruffalo in the HBO drama Task.
