When Olympic snowboarding champion Red Gerard isn’t competing, his personal style is pretty low-key. “I’m easy,” the 25-year-old tells Robb Report. “I usually wear jeans or chinos, and a crewneck.” But thanks to Ralph Lauren, that will change in February, when Gerard and around 250 other American athletes head to Milan for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

On Thursday, the American fashion house unveiled Team USA’s uniforms for the opening and closing ceremonies of the games, which take a slightly more sartorial approach than past years. Fitting, given that competitors will be in and around one of the world’s great fashion capitals.

“We wanted something that was elevated, that was sophisticated, that told the story of America—that was not just sweat pants,” says David Lauren, the company’s chief branding and innovation officer, with a laugh. Most of the opening ceremony look, which includes a toggle coat and generously cut double-pleated trousers, is rendered in a creamy shade of white. “I think there’s an optimism about that, and a hopefulness in white,” Lauren adds. For the closing ceremony, there’s a bold red ski jacket with patches that give it a retro feel, plus a turtleneck that should make it easy to slip on any medals the competitors bring home. “The graphicness of the closing ceremony is more performance-oriented,” he says. “It just gives you a whole other side.”

Crucially, all of the pieces from the opening and closing ceremonies are made in America. “These white jackets are made here in Long Island City,” Lauren says proudly. “The closing ceremony jackets are made in New Jersey. Elements of the pieces come from across the country, whether you’re in Oregon or L.A. or the Carolinas,” he adds. “It takes quite a lot of work to create the quality and quantity of pieces that we need for the games.”

Part of the high demand is that Ralph Lauren sells pieces to the public in order to help fund Team USA’s activities. “We’re one of the few teams that are not paid for by the government, so the sale of these products makes it possible for them to compete,” Lauren says. The products range in price from $28 for the closing ceremony socks to $1,998 for the opening ceremony’s toggle coat.

And though it’s not entirely made in America, the village wear collection that the athletes get to wear in their downtime is an equally important part of the mission. Standout among its offerings is a shearling bomber jacket that’s near and dear to Lauren’s heart.

“When my father started the company and was first designing ties—and my mother and grandmother were sewing labels into those ties—he used to deliver those ties to his clients and stores wearing a bomber jacket just like this one,” he says. “This jacket has meaning for me and for our company, and the fact that it’s now a part of the Olympic uniforms, it has even more.”

Asked about the pieces he can see himself wearing when he’s out of uniform, Gerard points to the trousers. “I think they did a really good job with the pants,” he says, noting that they’re generously cut. “I’m definitely a looser-fit type of person.” And given the current verve for a wider-cut trouser, that means both he—and the Team USA uniforms—are bang on trend.
