The Buyer of the Original Hermès Birkin Plans to Show It, Not Sell It

It looks like the original Hermès Birkin will stay out of the hands of collectors for the foreseeable future.

The Japanese company that purchased the handbag for a record 8.6 million euros ($10.1 million) at a Sotheby’s auction in Paris earlier this year is planning to display it in museums and galleries rather than resell it, as reported by Reuters. That is quite surprising, given the company itself trades in second-hand luxury goods.

Valuence Japan buys and sells high-value designer items, such as watches, jewelry, and, of course, handbags. It snapped up the Birkin on July 10, winning a fierce 10-minute bidding battle involving eight other collectors. A source with knowledge of the sale told Robb Report that Lauren Sánchez was the person just outbid in the end, though her representatives said that story is “completely false.” The final hammer price cemented the Birkin as the most expensive handbag ever sold at auction and the most valuable luxury item ever sold at Sotheby’s Paris.

Shinsuke Sakimoto, cofounder and CEO of Valuence, presented the Birkin to the press in Tokyo on Wednesday, explaining that the bag’s provenance, not price, should be the focus.

“We believe that products should not be spoken about in terms of price, but rather through the stories that include the brand’s philosophy and values; in other words, they should be spoken about in terms of their significance,” Sakimoto said.

Indeed, the handbag in question inspired what is now the world’s most coveted (and expensive) accessory. The original Birkin was custom-made for the late, great Jane Birkin in 1984. Legend has it, the Franco-British actress and singer sat next to then-Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight and told him she needed a practical yet elegant bag to carry all her personal belongings and baby gear. Dumas made her exactly that, presenting this all-black leather prototype. Hermès then created a smaller, commercial version, which was an instant hit. Today, the bag is available in several sizes and materials, including exotic skins such as crocodile, alligator, lizard, and ostrich. Each one is handmade by a single artisan, requiring 18 to 24 hours of work, 36 pieces of leather, and 680 stitches to come to fruition.

Birkins routinely fetch incredible sums at auction. One Chinese collector recently raked in $3 million with the sale of 76 luxury handbags. They are solid investments, too. But, as Sakimoto points out, sometimes it’s not about the money.
