“I think we’re both storytellers,” says Cabana cofounder Martina Mondadori of interior designer and William White founder Will Cooper. “Much like Renzo Mongiardino, the way he interprets interiors is almost like a movie.” And it’s impossible to disagree with Mondadori once you set foot into William White HQ, which Cooper has draped and tented to spectacular effect with some 500 yards of terra-cotta-striped Italian cotton for the occasion of his collaboration with the Italian design publication-lifestyle brand.

Adding to the ambiance at last night’s launch was the new range of Cabana candles: Gardenia, Fig, Tuberose and Amber, all “editorial pillars” for Mondadori that evoke specific regions that have inspired her work. Travel is central to both Cooper and Mondadori’s work so when Mondadori saw the stack of textiles Cooper had sourced on a trip to Uzbekistan, it was decided they would make the perfect upholstery for Cooper’s signature slipper chairs. (Cabana had also done an extensive portfolio on the country around the same time Cooper was traveling, so it was a full-circle moment).
For anyone who has picked up a copy of Cabana, which reads more coffee table book than magazine, you know how difficult it is not to be seduced. To start, there are the fabric covers—the latest issue featuring a series of iconic William Morris prints, full-bleed images and heavyweight paper at a time when most of the industry has been reduced to flimsy stock. “Even the ads are beautiful!” Oprah, who of course published her own magazine for 20 years, recently marveled on Instagram. And just when you think you know it, Mondadori surprises (seriously, who saw the Gwyneth Paltrow collab coming?).

“I was so blown away by the tented situation (a Cooper signature) and I knew immediately that we had to do something together,” says Mondadori of her first visit to Cooper’s space. “Martina is a world builder and I align with that so much,” says Cooper, whose café-clothing-home store on Canal Street is the coolest retail project going at the moment (where else can you place an order for bespoke clothing and pick up a lamp designed by an AD100 talent, all while sipping what is reportedly the city’s best coffee, sourced from Yemen’s Port of Mokha?). Stop in, pick up some magazines (you’ll find Robb Report on the newsstand as well), and shop the William White x Cabana edit.
And what will become of the countless yards of cotton? Fear not, Cooper’s already making plans. Caftans, please!
