BMW just found a way to make the M2 even more attractive to enthusiasts.

The German luxury marque just unveiled a new variant of its smallest sports car called the Turbo Design Edition. The exclusive model is available exclusively as a manual and an attractive livery inspired by the legendary 2002 Turbo.

The 2002 Turbo was the original tiny Bimmer that could and helped pave the way for today’s M2. The standard version was introduced in 1968 as a 02 series with a more potent 2.0-liter inline-four, but it wasn’t until 1973 that the automaker decided to strap a turbocharger to the mill. That change made the 2002 Europe’s first turbocharged car and boosted output by 40 hp to 168 and top speed by 16 mph to 131 mph. Those numbers may sound modest today, but they made the slight two-door a force to be reckoned with on the autobahn and racetrack.

The M2 Turbo Design Edition is, in BMW’s words, a “reverential tribute” to the car that helped establish the automaker’s high-performance reputation. Each version of the muscular coupe features a special livery inspired by its predecessor. The variant is available in one primary hue, Alpine White, with a black hood and roof, as well as hand-painted BMW Motorsport stripes. The hood’s powerdome also features reversed “Turbo” script just like the original 2002 (a non-reversed version of this graphic can be found throughout the interior). Rounding the exterior details out is a staggered set of black M Dual-Spoke wheels— 19 inches in the front, 20 inches in the back—but gold-bronze rims are available as an option.

The variant’s powertrain has been left untouched—with good reason. The M2 is considerably more powerful than the 2002 Turbo. Its twin-turbocharged inline-six makes 473 hp and 406 ft lbs of torque. It may be more powerful than its predecessor, but the newer two-door still comes, exclusively, with a manual gearbox, in this case a six-speed unit. Thanks to all that grunt, the coupe can rocket from zero to 60 in just 4.1 seconds and hit a top speed of 177 mph with the optional M Driver’s package.
