This Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4 Keeps Falling in Value

There’s no such thing as a sure bet.

Just look at the Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4. When it was unveiled, during the 2021 edition of Monterey Car Week, it looked destined to become one of the collectible cars of the decade. Five years later, that no longer looks to be the case.

The latest proof is a barely example, spotted by CarScoops, that failed to meet reserve on Bring a Trailer last week. When the auction ended last Thursday, bidding for the gold supercar had topped out at $2.2 million, which was below what the seller had been looking for.

The unsuccessful high bid is more than a half-million less than the M.S.R.P. for Countach LPI 800-4. At the time of its debut, it was widely reported that the limited-run model started at $2.8 million, and the example up for auction, in addition to having just 142 miles on the odometer, was finished in Oro Eleos, one of several premium Ad Personam options that added $78,000 to the car’s price tag.

The rejected bid is also well below the discounted $2.5 million that the same exact car sold for on Bring a Trailer in September 2024. The big difference between then and now? The car had totaled a measly extra 57 miles in the preceding 18 months. That marks the only time that a Countach LPI 800-4 has successfully sold on the popular auction platform, with the different examples failing to meet reserve in two other instances, in addition to last week’s failed sale.

The Countach LPI 800-4 failure to hold its value won’t come as a complete surprise to some enthusiasts. As cool as the homage to Lamborghini’s most iconic car may look, it hasn’t been without its detractors, with some viewing the car, which is basically a reskinned Aventador, as little more than a “cynical cash grab.”

Still, it’s not time to bury the car just yet. It wouldn’t be a complete surprise if the market changes its mind about the Countach LPI 800-4 in the years to come. It’s rare, with only 112 examples having rolled off the line, and powerful. Its mild-hybrid powertrain makes 803 hp, which, we expect, will eventually be enough to win over collectors in the market for something exclusive.
