Does it feel like your car collection is lacking in glitz and glamour? Here’s one vehicle that will immediately fix that problem
A restored 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster is currently up for bid on Bring a Trailer. The sparkling two-door car may lack the iconic gullwing doors of its hard-top sibling, but it is easily one of the most beautiful open-top vehicles to ever hit the road.
When it comes to post-war sports cars, the 300 SL is near the very top of the mountain. Introduced in 1954, the coupe isn’t just one of the most beautiful cars ever built, but one of the fastest cars of its era as well. Despite this, it didn’t achieve the popularity Mercedes had expected, so, in 1957, the marque decided to spice things up by chopping off the vehicle’s roof. The 300 SL Roadster was the only version sold by them until 1963, during which time 1,858 examples rolled off the line, bringing total production of the iconic model to 3,258 examples.

The example, chassis 002520, up for auction is a U.S.-spec model that was delivered brand-new to its original owner in Milan in 1960. The car, which has been owned by less than a handful of collectors over the last six decades, was treated to a multi-year refurbishment last decade. During this process, the car was stripped of its original white paint, stripped to bare metal, and repainted its current metallic Anthracite hue. The car has a beige leather two-seat interior, rides on a set of 15-inch steel wheels, and comes with a black soft top and color-matching hardtop for those days when the weather takes a turn for the worse.
This particular 300 SL Roadster is powered by a rebuilt 3.0-liter M198 inline-six engine mated to a four-speed manual transmission. When it was brand new, the mill was capable of making 240 hp and 203 ft lbs of torque. The car looks to be in wonderful shape, but it should be noted that while the car has totaled just over 1,000 miles since it was refurbished, its true mileage is unknown.

If you’ve spent time perusing the comments on Bring a Trailer, you know that its users are a pretty passionate bunch. That’s why it’s little surprise to learn that bidding for something as special as this 300 SL has already topped $1 million. And, with the auction running through Thursday, March 5, you can expect that number to continue to grow before the gavel bangs.
