This Bonkers Batmobile Is Based on Mercedes-Benz and Now up for Grabs

The very best Batmobiles combine a fantastical gothic aesthetic with just enough reality, and a Batmobile tribute car now up for auction is a more worthy attempt than others.

The AVG Batmobile Tribute is based on a second-generation Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMG, which had 93,206 miles on the odometer when it was transformed into the car it is today. Under the hood is a 5.4-liter V-8 engine that, originally, made a little under 500 horsepower. A Danish tuner named Kleeman later upped that number to 600 horsepower.

A Ukrainian shop called Specautotuning and a German shop called AVG Autos then transformed it into the tribute Batmobile, making the car a true product of Europe. The owner of the Mercedes spent around $290,000 to make the car a tribute Batmobile, a number which does not include the cost of the donor Mercedes, according to SBX Cars, which is hosting the auction.

Among the special features on the Batmobile tribute car are floating wheel fenders, “dual simulated machine gun turret,” flip-up doors with windshields, two rear spoilers, dual exhaust, and a plate on the back that says “GOTHAM.” The tires are heavy-duty all-terrain types, and the exterior lighting is LED, while the turn signals are animated. The transmission is automatic; the brakes and suspension have also been upgraded.

Inside, the car keeps much of its Mercedes CL55 interior, along with four-point harnesses on the bucket seats, a leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel, and an “emergency entry/exit mechanism.”

Bidding for the AVG Batmobile Tribute was at $50,000 as of Thursday, though, with 11 days left in the auction, that number is sure to rise. The same car was previously sold by SBX Cars for $270,000 in December, which is a good guide for how much the car is worth, and also, perhaps, its shelf life for new owners. If you buy it, you will probably have the coolest car in your garage, and possibly even on your block.

Still, that number December is less than what it cost to convert the car to unofficial Batmobile status, though you do something like this for love, not money.
