This $17.5 Million Malibu Home Is Listed With a ‘Selling Sunset’ Star

After his home burned down in the 2018 Woolsey Fire, designer James Byford decided to rebuild on his half-acre lot in the rolling hills above Malibu‘s Zuma Beach.

The co-founder and CEO of the design firm Vast Studio was understandably concerned about future fires, and the home was constructed using as many fire-retardant materials and processes as possible. If the water and power are shut off during an emergency, for example, there’s a pump with a battery backup connected to the swimming pool so that water can be used without relying on public utilities.

Byford was careful not to compromise function at the expense of form. The 6,000-square-foot estate draws heavily on Moroccan design motifs, with the celebrated interior designer Brittny Button bringing in touches like a 13th-century fireplace in the living room and Moroccan fountains along the exterior. The recently completed residence is now being offered for $17.5 million with Selling Sunset star Emma Hernan at the Oppenheim Group.

“In this day and age, it is increasingly rare to come across such a remarkable, unique property, let alone in one of the most desirable communities in the world,” Hernan told Robb Report. “This artisan-built masterpiece is truly one of a kind with exceptional craftsmanship and imported luxury materials to create a finish that truly is unmatched.”

The overall vibe is bright and airy, befitting its location above the Pacific Ocean. The kitchen, decked out in Taj Mahal stone and hand-built oak cabinetry, flows through to the living spaces, while four bedroom suites are framed by arched windows and doorways that open to the outdoors. The homeowner’s retreat includes a fireplace and a spacious bathroom with a Vast-designed circular soaking tub that seemingly melts into the floor. A Moroccan-tile pool and spa anchors the backyard, where the soothing sounds of a waterfall blend with the distant roar of the ocean.

Built into the hillside, the lower level is all about hosting and hanging out. A wine display wall lines the hallway leading to a brass-finished bar carved into rock walls. You can enjoy your drinks in the speakeasy lounge, which is equipped with a DJ booth for spinning records. Nearby, there’s a cozy home theater with a popcorn machine, along with a wellness wing—with a gym, sauna, steam room, and cold plunge—that opens to a pickleball court amid groomed plantings.
