The Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo Just Got More Comfortable


Mercedes-Benz is ready to be even more of a presence in the camper van world.

The German marque, and maker of the ubiquitous Sprinter base, has taken production of its smaller Marco Polo model entirely in-house. The first van following the move is more comfortable than ever before and features an upgraded pop-up roof.

Adventurers around the world have been turning the Sprinter commercial van into a camper since the 1990s, but Mercedes’s involvement in the space goes back even further. The company has been building the Marco Polo since 1984, with the smaller van first based on the T1, or Bremer Transporter, and then, since 2015, on the V-Class. Throughout this time, the vehicle has been a collaboration between Mercedes and camper company Westfalia, according to New Atlas. But now, the automaker will handle every single step of production by itself, from the bodywork to the finishing details.

Starting with the 2026 model year, each Marco Polo will be built at the Mercedes-Benz Van plant in Vitoria, Spain, and then shipped to Ludwigsfelde, Germany, for final conversion. The automaker says this makes it easier to ensure the highest quality standards. That’s not the only benefit of the change, though. Mercedes also says that the in-house shift will give it more flexibility during the production process and result in faster delivery times.

The first in-house Marco Polo doesn’t look radically different from the last Westfalia model, which debuted in 2024. Instead, the automaker has focused on refining what was already a solid foundation. The cabin—which still features a compact galley, a multi-function wardrobe, and seating that can be converted to a full-size bed—comes equipped with an LED ambient lighting setup, enhanced sound system, and a new awning. The pop-up roof, which features a double-skinned aluminum shell, has been completely redesigned and now provides close to an additional four inches of headroom when expanded to its full height. As in the past, the pop-up roof can be used as a tent when parked, increasing the van’s sleeping capacity from two to four.

Mercedes will start taking orders for the 2026 Marco Polo in the weeks to come, but the van isn’t expected to make its full debut until the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon in August. Pricing has yet to be announced, but something north of the 2025 model’s €80,700, or roughly $95,300, starting price seems likely. Now, if only Mercedes would see fit to bring the van stateside finally.
